W00t!

They came to my workplace today [:D] i couldn't resist opening up one of em and having a peek. Got a question though. I dont want to have blacked out windows so I need a mask to cover the windows. My plan is to lay out a load of masking tape into a sheet, or buy a large sheet of masking tape, stick the black windows on it and cut out some new masks that'll peel off when painting is finished. Is this a good plan?

Yeah it's a good idea. I did this too and it worked well.

Just check before you actually stick the self-made masks on though because they will need trimming to fit correctly even though you used the blacked out window stickers as templates.

I have painted a few (lexan) bodies that came without window masks it's actaully really simple. But some of the Tamiya masking tape this is very good quality and it makes up for razor sharp edges. Use this tape around the edges of the windows, or whatever space needs to be covered. Take your time to do this, you should never have any need to hurry when doing things like these. Then fill in the remaining space with cheaper masking tape or sheet. This will save a lot of the Tamiya tape.

I have masked off some Dirt Trasher windows this way, and also the blue/silver. I also left the rear wondow open by accident, but I happen to like it more this way too. This is the result:

I hope this helps! [8D]

You can buy A4 vinyl masking sheet, this I've found to be the best way of creating masks for large areas. Most model shops should sell it, or artist supply shops.

I'm hopin' mine arrives in the next several days too. [:D] Got it from StellaModels.

Window sticker on top of masking tape; that's the same method I plan to use. Now if I can only figure out the body color I want.

I mask and paint all my designs using vinyl masking film, it gives a much cleaner edge then masking tape and as it is in one piece there is less chance of paint getting under the edge. The best film I have found in the UK is available on a roll from Hobbycraft. Unlike a lot of masking films from graphics supplies the Hobbycraft stuff is not affected by polycarbonate paint. You can leave it on for weeks and it will still pull off cleanly.
