  • Motor mounted to plate with correct holes for pinions?
  • Differentials needing work?
  • Object inside motor can?
  • Dirt in drive cups?

If the noise is also related to friction in the drivetrain, you can isolate it fairly easily. With no motor installed and assuming you have bearing or well-lubed bushings installed, it should all roll freely. Remove the motor, if you still have friction/grinding remove the propshaft and see which gearbox makes the noise, then remove upper gears and try again, if you still have noise/friction it's the differential or drive cups.

Loads of things to check...

Does it grind all the time, or only at higher speeds, or only when turning?

Is it the motor itself? Does it feel smooth if the motor is not in the car?

Does the car have full bearings? If not, are there any bearings/shafts worn out? Rear ball diff assembled properly with correct grease and the disc spring plates in the right way? Large diff washers in the front gear diff are present and gears are not worn out? Motor pinion in the right holes and meshing properly with the spur, and pinion not worn out? Bent prop shaft? Drive shaft cups aren't too worn or notched?

Like Bajablitzer is saying it is very impotant to have the right distance of the pinion when attaching to the motor. In the TA-01/02 sets is a special red thingy for adjusting the distance. If pinion isn't fully on the spur and you are using a hot (ie hotter then 540 can) motor grind will start.

Second thing is some of the 3rd party metal motor mounts differ from the original plastic ones so maybe you are using wrong hole-pinion combi.

One more think to consider is the top rear gearbox plate. There are 3 screws holding it down and 1 is between the spur gear and the idler gear ends and if the plastic cracks or get's bent the spur gear or idler gear can skip giving you the noise
