I have this Super Champ that came with an older Futaba Radio and the radio receiver doesn't mention anything about BEC.  Can I simply bypass the old 4 AA batterpack by soldering the on/off switch wires to the MSC just like it was done in later Tamiya models?  Do I run the risk of frying something??

Or perhaps I should ditch the original MSC and put in a ESC?

I don't know if its doing it any good but I have two R2GS receivers that have been hooked up this way for a few years and still seem to be working just fine. I have only been using 7.2v batteries no 8.4v as that would for sure fry it.

That receiver does NOT have BEC built-in.  That being said, you could wire directly to MSC-- it just sends 7.2v to the receiver.  So if you don't care too much about the receiver, try it and see if it lasts.

I have a Grasshopper with the same receiver hooked up to a TEU101-BK which does not have BEC either and it works ok.  But it could fry tomorrow, but I don't care about it.  When it does finally die I can tell the wife I need new gear!!

Hooked it straight up to the MSC.  Works right now.  Lets see how long it lasts! [:o]

Thanks for the input.

No problem-- glad it works.

I actually have an old Hitec Challenger 260 I've been running in my Wild Willy without BEC for a while now.  If anything's going to get cooked by 7.2 volts, it's that old thing!  I also have 2 of the exact same receivers you pictured hooked up to vintage ESCs (Futaba MC8s) without BEC that still work after 20 years (in a Hotshot & RC-10).  I've even run some 3500mAh packs thru them and no problems yet....  Like I said before though, I'd be glad to have an excuse to upgrade!!  [:P]
