Hi guys,

Could i trouble you all for suggestions as to the best overall, mostly bashing, informal racing, gearing for a TL-01. currently it is a 21T pinion on standard gears. Tried speed tuned, but found this overgeared. Should I go for a 23T pinion, or stick to the 21 (or even drop to the 19T) - motor is a Mtronik budget big liks 17x2T, ESC is Mtronik  tempo11, car is fully raced, alu propshaft, oil shocks.

cheers for suggestions!- gearing confuses me!

ok lol gearing can be a little bit of a black art to be fair.

Basically its given in the form X to 1 where X is the number of turns on the motor to the number of turns of the wheels on the car.

So for Example one can have 10:1 where the motors turns 10 times to the wheels once, Or say 5:1 where the motor turns 5 times to the wheels once.

Taking this example further a 5:1 ratio will twice as high top end compared to the 10:1 however it will have  a much slower acceleration and there will be a greater load on the motor during acceleration.

As General rule it is best to have to higher gear ratio and over rev the motor than to have a lower gear ratio and cause excessive load on the motor -The ideal for a track is to make sure that your car reaches top speed right at the end of your straight, Obviously in bashing this doesnt occur as there isnt such a pre-defined track.

Im unsure about your motors torque curve tho for safety i would start with a 19tooth pinion and work up if heats not to high and the motor doesnt fell under pressure - u will soon tell with slow acceleration - If its constantly spinning the wheels and really fast to top end and feels very revy then go for a 21.

Sorry to not give a definate answer but gear ratios are very much a black art and are track and distance specific, Its not like shocks and oils which are more clean cut - I hope I have given you an insight into some of the factors that you will need to consider and gd luck!

Thanks Ryck, that does clarify things a lot. Will try out the different combinations and monitor motor temperature/ performance. Thought there was maybe a ,standard' combination for the TL-01 and a 17 turn motor.

cheers

No problems - And afraid there isnt a standard option - As track, driving style and motors are all different, Even Tamiya's recormended charts in there rc guide book note that its for the Tamiya track with a tamiya driver.

best of luck
