im looking for a new car..... AGAIN. This time I was thinking of a nitro off-road car, and I came across this site

http://www.fusionhobbies.com/off_road_cars.htm

http://www.fusionhobbies.com/model_info/ta43514.htm

Now, the one that i want to get, is the Tamiya Nitro Thunder, the price they have seems a little too cheap though as it is RTR, has anyone ordered from this site? any comments, it just seems to cheap to me...[:P]

Thanks

It does seem cheap, but I guess that must be the price! Fusion hobbies are good people to do business with.

Maybe Tamiya have just woken up, smelt the coffee and realised that the superb (and some would argue, superior[:D]) HPI rush evo 2 is available RTR for £199?

That kinda makes the Tamiya seem pricey!

I don't see how you could say the Evo2 is superior to a Tamiya model which isn't even released yet [?]. The Tamiya's a nice looking buggy, is it 4wd or 2wd, the ad doesn't make it clear.

I agree about Fusion though, they are a good company to deal with, friendly and helpful, and their prices are about the best I've seen in the UK, particularly with the 10% TC member discount.

I thought the superior HPI comment might get a response! [:P]

Seriously though, the Tamiya looks cool and would appear to be RWD in the pics that I have seen. Apparently it will have an optional 2 speed gearbox as well, although I have no idea how much that will cost.

Tamiya also claim a top speed of 70kmh as opposed to the HPI's claimed 66kmh, but that all depends on how well the car is set up and will of course vary from engine to engine.

Still, the HPI does have more than one ace up it's sleeve.. As well as being an astonishingly capable thing to drive and looking great it also has a battery rota-start system.

Much better than those awful pull starts that never seem to work.... considering Nitro's popularity these days I'm surprised that consumers put up with them.

Hehe, you can't say another manufacturer's car is better than a Tamiya here and expect to get away with it [;)].

Having said that, I do think that other manufacturers (HPI and Hobao) are ahead of Tamiya when it comes to nitro offroaders. The prices are better and they seem to have more experience in this market.

I'm thinking of getting a nitro truck, and the Tamiya doesn't really figure in the equation unfortunately, a combination of being too expensive and not popular enough for the local shops to hold spares. The Evo2, Savage, MT-2 and Hyper7 seem to give that much more for the money than any of the current Tamiya offerings.

I too am pretty interested in a Nitro...would mean selling off 2 of my 3 Tamiyas though to fund it [V]

The only Nitro I've driven so far is the Evo 2 and I REALLY like it [:D] The RTR RC10GT would also be a very serious contender, but it doesn't have the electric start...something that really impressed me!

The Schumacher NITRO 21 XTR 3E RTR has a lot of bang for your buck (.21 engine) but it has far too many initials after it's name. Imagine if people asked what it was and you had to say NITRO 21 XTR 3E RTR every time! Plus I've never been that impressed by Schumacher's quality.

The Savage is great (and yet a another fine HPI product [:D])...what a beast!!

If I do get a Nitro it will probably be an evo 2..... as you may have gathered, I like it a lot!

Err, I've seen some chassis pics and it hasn't impressed me that much. The steering system seems very odd and I'm not a big fan of the mainly plastic chassis with a metal motor mount. Obviously I haven't held one and certainly not driven one but it looks to me like there are cars that are better for the same or less money.

I would say that if your limit is strictly £250, and you are happy with 2WD, get a HPI Evo 2 with Roto-start (about £199) and a starter kit with nitro fuel, glow starter etc. This will knock it up to about £225, leaving you a bit spare to pay for postage.

If you could stretch a bit more, and you want 4WD, the HPI MT2 is nice (about £274) and the Hyper 7 buggy at the same price is pretty good too. Most of the guys at our local nitro club run the Hyper 7 buggies, so that must mean they are pretty good.

For non-Tamiya stuff, I tend to use www.apexmodels.com and www.modelsport.co.uk - they both provide good service and reasonable prices.

I'll second Apex models as they are my local model shop. They are efficient and offer lots of helpful advice. Prices are about the cheapes you will find as well. I have never used their mail order because I only live 3 miles away from them [:D] , but I'm sure that they are excellent.
