i have had the same problem at times, and for me it was always standard masking tape wasn't upto the job, i will ALWAYS use for every paint job tamiyas own masking, i know some people use others but i have yet to mess a shell up when using tamiyas.

There maybe ways to remove some the leakage from the shell but it should be done with care. and i dont wanna be the one to direct you wrong on this. someone should be able to give you answer.

Looks good what you have managed to do fella

Looks OK to me!

I've had paint lifting when using Tamiya

masking tape.  In my experience it's because I laid the paint

layers on too thickly.  This can cause the paint to become

rubbery, a bit like a rubber film, that will lift up off the plastic

very easily.  My other problem is that I'm very impatient, and I

try to lift off the mask before letting the paint fully cure.

Generally it should be left at room-temp for 24 hours before taking off

the masks.  My "painting room" is unheated, so this time of year

the paint doesn't always cure properly.

Next time I paint lexan I will also attempt to use a very fine

abrasive prior to painting.  Apparently this gives a better finish

and makes the paint adhere stronger.

I also have problems when

washing a shell after I've masked everything - because the masking tape

curls at the edges and lets paint bleed thru.  I can't wash prior

to masking, because the masking process itself invariably involves

getting thumbprints all over the inside of the shell.

I have yet to find a suitable answer for this one!

Wear latex gloves? i guess the tape would then just stick to the gloves...

how about wiping over the surface with a cleaning solution rather than wash the whole lot in one go with soapy water?

iv tried to save the dark impact shell, but its not the best job in the world, how ever my g/f said she would get me a new shell to create the master piece i want, so for now iv had some good practice, and have a nice (ish) looking basher shell!

you can save the shell by cleaning up the paint bleeds with a bit of nitro fuel on a Q-tip.  I was able to fix a couple of bobbles I had on my GT2 shell.

Looks like a good effort Martyn.

Spraying and painting details is not the easiest of skills to master, it took me about a week to get my MB how i wanted it.

In my opinion i think it looks great (as you say) as a basher shell and i can't wait to see the new one all painted up [y]

Hope you can make a Clumber meet soon.

Cheers, Russ

Edit: Just a thought for the new shell, maybe mask the windows after spraying the smoke spray?
