I have spent months searching ebay for a tamiya car that i can afford. I finally found a ta02 escort. It arrived a few days a go and I was extremely excited as it is my first tamiya car. I ran it for a few mins and it worked fine (very fast!), I ran it again and it got stuck in reverse, full speed. I turned off the car but it wouldn't stop, I had to disconnect the battery. After I reconnected it, i tried to run it with no body on to see what was happening, the speed controller moved when I pressed forward on my controller, but it stuck half way up and the car stopped. The next day i charged the battery and then tried to run the (now cleaned, was very dirty) car. The steering worked and the speed controller moved flawlessley, except no wheels turned.

This has been a masive dissapointment to me after waiting so long, can anyone tell me what is wrong? Should I replace the speed controller or the servo, or both?

PLEASE HELP, Shane

hi there firstly does your servo move ok or does it stick, if it moves ok then just check all the wires are still soldered on the back of the speed control, might be a loose wire, if the servo is faulty these can be picked up for a couple of pounds but it might be worth getting a electronic speed control, these are cheap and much better. just make sure the motor is still ok by connecting a battery to it.

hope this helps

Might be an idea to check the servo / rod adjustments for misalignment , also the msc needs to be clean all round and across the contacts  and check the pressure nut is tightend as it should be on the rotor, check the resistor to be sure, check the motor wire connectors too [:D]

Motor is fine, servo and speed controller move great, still no wheel movement

Do the gears turn freely without the motor installed?, have you tried a volt meter across the motor output wires via the speed controller to see if you have volts output on the 3 speeds of the msc? .If you only get top speed voltage ,then the resistor could be at fault. Also try a continuity check with the volt meter on the live and negative wires from the msc to the motor wire outputs to see if there are no breaks in the circuit. Check out the msc to make sure it is well clean.Make sure that the battery is good , and holding a charge properly - sounds obvious but most things are . An ESC will replace the MSC and servo in one go , all you will see is a small unit with several wires coming from it .Check out ebay for a TEU101BK unit and you will get the idea

could always be the favorite pinion grub screw has come lose,

That would explain the motor reving but no wheel movement.

take the motor out and look at the gear on the end, this should be securely tightened using the grubscrew.

If its not then get out an allen key and tighten it.

and congrats on ure first (of many) tamiya cars.

Make sure that the plastic motor mount isn't broken, this is a weak point, that can be rectified by fitting a metal upgrade. I not telling you to splash out on upgrades with no money, but this along with other upgrades will make your car last a little bit longer between runs.

Above all, have fun!!

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. I have replaced the msc and it runs fine now, except when i steer left the car goes right and visa versa but i can sort that myself. The ESC sounds good, i'll have a look for one on ebay.

Thanks for the help, Shane

Your Transmitter should have 2 switches on it ( usually at the bottom somewhere) ,channel 1 + channel 2 , by switching the steering channel over it will reverse the action of the servo , thus , steering right will be right on the servo. If your Transmitter hasn't got servo reverses on it , it would be quite cheap to replace the Transmitter with one that does have it , or get a matched servo to your existing handset for the steering [:D
