Pretty much anyone you want.  the drivetrain is stout.  There is even a video floating on the internet of a brushless one.  In mine I use a sport tuned

the tranny is pretty robust like shodog said almost anymore will work I have a novak crawler brushless in mine with 14 cells going at it and I opened it up after 3 days use and still working clean.  Plan to put a HV Maxx in currently and see what happens...

I use a Integy 55turn lathe motor, 1st & 2nd are quite slow, but 3rd is a little faster than walking speed. With this motor, and a 3000 pack, I'm getting about an hour's run time.

im alittle torn on this one, just ordered my high lift yesterday and dont know what to use either around a 37t lathe motor or just the stock motor as i want it to climb but would be nice if i could have a little speed.

Why don't you save the money and build it with the stock motor first ? That way you have a "baseline" to compare to.  I think those lathe motors are for extreme die hard rock crawling guys aren't they ?

If you want your high lift to climb, then you've got to start somewhere else first.

The stock wheels are too small for off roading, the axels and under guard will bottom out easily. Running with the diffs locked will help, but the truck will still be dragging its belly along half the time. [;)]

I've gone for 2.2 size wheels on my truck (using an after market lift kit to raise the body up) and i'm running a 13 tooth pinion gear with a standard Johnson 540 motor.

Changing to a smaller pinion will give your truck more torque, and the larger diameter wheels keep the truck stable and still fairly quick in 3rd gear. Plus the ride hight and grip is increased - much better for rough terrain!

hi there thanks for that, i have ordered the body lift kit off ebay today, and looking at some hpi 2.2 chrome wheels to go with the yokohama geolander tyres, is the 13t pinion included in the kit or would i need to purchase one.

IMHO, stay with the standard pinion (not 13 tooth), in case you get the wrong pitch and have meshing problems. Fit either a 35 or a 45 turn lathe for general running, a 35 will be closer to the stock motors speed, but loads of extra torque. I use a 55 because I do extreme off roading, not crawling, think Land Rover G4 Challenge, so speed isn't what I'm after, to be honest I rarely use 3rd gear.

It's a standard Clod Buster 13 tooth pinion. Same pitch as the stock high lift one and its a direct fit as the motor mount is adjustable.

It also makes the gearbox quieter.

I've got yokohama's on mine too, they are perfect on or off road [:)

I agree with the 55 motor being too slow.  Adam's truck in first and second gear would be slower than my XC with the 80 turn motor with the 20 tooth pinion. I think a 35 turn motor would be the best bet.
