When people buy from Hong Kong, what sites do they use? I was looking at Stella Models, but was a bit wary as I couldn't find out how much shipping would be for an R34 Kit. Has anyone used them before and would be able to advise me of their costs?

cheers

Quite a few people here use Stella and are very happy with the service (even if their bank managers aren't [;)] ). To get a postage quote, set up an account on their site, add the kit that you are interested in to your shopping cart then follow the 'checkout' process through up to the section about shipping, then cancel out before confirming the order. Failing that, I'm sure that a quick email would get you the answer that you need [:)] HTH. David

I did as you recommended...

Stella wanted £48.87 for the kit, then an extra £23.57 to post, totalling £72.44

Fusion are offering the same kit for £80 delivered.

I guess in this case I'd go with fusion, as it avoids the risk of getting stung for taxes! Are the saving of ordering from HK normally more significant than this?

cheers

Hello JB,

The kit you bought was relatively inexpensive so there was not much of a savings to be had. For a more expensive kit, the savings might be greater.

Also, you don't always buy overseas just to save pricing - another reason is kit availability and hard to find items.

Cheers Joe, I'll bear that in mind!

I've spent the last few hours worrying my wallet on Ebay, Fusion and Stella, before settling on a new bodyset for my VR6.... i'll keep it mint this time! I'll dig the old one out for a runner, as I'll have to shorten the wheelbase. The old shell is in a right mess! Might try to do something interesting with it, we'll see how it goes. I'll upload some pics as soon as I sort my full membership

p.s. I've only been a member here for a few days, but I've learnt so much so far, and everyone who has replied to me has been most helpful, so thank you all very much! I'm reliving my youth and loving it! I'm now in my twenties and work in a bank, but I'm still playing with toy cars! that's nothing to be ashamed of, is it?

In this case, James at Fusion is probably your best bet. Double check whether his version of the kit has the ESC (Stella's does) and factor this in before finally deciding. As others have said, you'd probably pay the same postage on a more expensive kit, so the potential savings could be better. You're right to be wary about duty/VAT etc. - there have been many discussions here on that subject but the concensus is that even if you get hit occasionally, over a few deals it's usually worth it to get the savings.

BTW. What did you mean about 'shortening the wheelbase' when talking about the VR6 shell? I thought it was standard touring car wheelbase (at least the V5 one is)...

Oh, and finally, is there anything to be ashamed about playing with toy cars in your twenties[?] Errrmm.....

You're only in your twenties, most of us are quite a bit older and still playing with toy cars.

re shortening the wheelbase, the Golf VR6 and possibly the Renault Clio came with a FF01 chassis slightly shorter than most, but it can be adjusted to the usual length. only maybe a centimetre or so difference.
