Does anyone know what the Tamiya Grasshopper/Hornet "high performance suspension kit" consist of? I am interested in one and am curious what I will be getting if I purchase it.

Thanks Shodog!

Two more questions, do you know if Tamiya ever offered a front oil shock upgrade for the Hornet/Grasshopper? Are the You G oil shocks any good?

Thanks again.

I think the hp kit has also the small and rare torsional springs which always break.

Tamiya never did a front shock upgrade, sorry never had the You G kit. [V]

Cheers

Like DJTheo said, tamiya never did but a few aftermarket companies like CRP and bolink did. Here is a shot of my Hornet with the CRP front shock kit

I am not familar with the kit offered by You-G

Shodog - is that one of the bodies from Parma? Man, I remember they used to make 5 or six different bodies for the frog and hornet. I wish I could find some of those today.

Great info guys...thanks. Here are the two shock kits I am looking at getting..

I am unsure if the Parma shocks are oil or not...anyone know?

Shodog, my Hornet has a similar aluminum aftermarket shock mount like yours, but mine is not angled on the end...it is designed to use the factory style shocks. Here is a pic of it..

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to upgrade the front of my Hornet to oil shocks?

Thanks again for the help guys.

What if you took another set of the little 'u' shaped brackets that are currently on the bottom of your hornet front springs, and added them to the shock mounts on the top. Then you'd have a place to mount 'normal' shocks. They'd probably have to be really short, maybe like touring car shocks.

Or, just mount your new oil shocks upside down, and screw the shock piston to the shock mount, instead of having it pass thru.

Man, I could have used a set of those red shock towers on my hornet a few weeks ago. Now I have a giant glob of JBWeld holding one side together.

Hi,

I did a Forum search but did not find the answer that I wanted so this looked like the most suitable post to hijack [;)]

Can you get a High Performance Suspension Kit from Tamiya for the re-release Grasshopper that gives it Hornet like independant rear suspension? i.e. have they released a HP Susp. kit. specifically for the re-re GH?

Does the old GH HP Susp. kit fit the re-release Grasshopper?

I just picked up a re-release Grasshopper kit and was wondering about this. Actually this question is more for my friend Mike who is thinking about getting a re-re GH and asked me this question.

Anyone know?

Cheers,

Alistair G.

Easiest way to get the HP suspension is to buy a used thrasher hornet with a good set of rear dampers

Oh, you mean transplant the re-re Hornet rear suspension onto the re-re GH ? Can you do this and does it work fine?

Mike actually has this in mind Jim ;-

...so he wants to use a GH chassis and a repro SS body and get a cheap SS runner. He just wants to have independant rear suspension on the GH chassis, but I suppose that you could do the same by using a Hornet chassis and SS repro body and simply putting GH front tyres onto it?

Cheers,

Sure, but if you want a new original set I have one, just mail me.

Hi Al,

Yeah, i'm looking at doing the hornet mod on the grasshopper, so i can have a Sand Scorcher REPLICA...

Biggusditchus suggested that i get the hornet, but i think the grasshopper body, and rear tyres look alot better, so what are the basic parts required to do this conversion, i have downloaded the hornet manual and it seems that i need:

D PARTS TREE ( 11 + 12 )

DAMPER PARTS BAG ( For the axle springs )

Would the Electronical Bay be the best source for these?

What are the differences between the hornet and grasshopper?

Hornet Has a lexan body, Grasshopper has a styrene body

Hornet has spiked rear tyres, Grasshopper has Padlatrak

Hornet has pivotoing rear suspension, grasshopper moves up and down as one

Hornet has oil filled rear shocks

Is that all?

Thanks

Mike

Mike, you pretty much summed up the differences. Considering your project in mind, it would be more cost effective to buy a re-re hornet. Then sell the lexan body off for $25 and buy two sets of padla trak tires.

Hi,

ShoDog : Is that your Hornet, if it is it's lookin' great! Could you please tell me who makes the Nerf Bars, can you still get CRP Parts? i really like the from shock mounts :D

And Shodog- jim- whatever, i already bought a re-re grasshopper, it's a DO NOT OPEN TILL XMAS job though :D..

Al sent me an email, saying that i shouldnt use Lexan paint on a styrene body because the chemicla qualities of the paint etch into the surface, what paint should i use, will any paint do?

Thanks

Mike

Sorry to post after myself but..

If i buy the parts to make my Gh a Hornet rear suspension ( the D PARTS ) do i need the little torsion springs, or are they surplus to my requirements?

Yup that my Hornet. Its a vintage chassis with a re re body. The nerf bars are made by parma. The CRP front shock kit includes a front tower and dampers. It requires you to modify the chassis by cutting off the platic shock towers. you can still find these parts from time to time on eBay.

The paint you need to use is hobby model paint. Tamiya makes an excelent line of the stuff.
