Just built TT01: Oh my God it just plain stinks!

My first thoughts after assembling a TT01.

I've not had one before, so I was intrigued to see what it was like, but soon I was to be very disappointed.

After (and during) building it, I felt one dominant thought:

This car stinks.

It reaks of cheapness, the front steering linkage doesn't even have ball-ends! It can't flex, it just has step-screws through a plastic bit rather than ball-ends on a threaded rod.

I wasted ball bearings on this thing, and even bought an alloy prop shaft..

Well if anyone wants a new built TT01 chassis with ball bearings and alloy propshaft, drop me a note.. I want this thing out of my house [:(!]

I'd agree, they are very cheaply produced, but then again, my last TT-01 cost £48 NIB. That's not even Nikko money.

With bearings, alloy steering, alloy propshaft, carbon brace, TRF dampers, alloy heatsink and decent electrics they go quite well. At the Spring Drive the only electric car that I couldn't keep pace with was Tipsy's Subaru which I think is a TB-02. Paul's a good driver, plus he was running treaded tyres on the rain soaked track and I was on kit slicks.

For a cheap blast they are good fun, but if you want to soup it up to go fast, better buying a better kit to start with as it's cheaper in the long run.

I say stick an M3 Sport Evo or 190 Evo II shell on and savour the looks [8D]

I have a tb02 and thats not that fantastic either, handles well but is slow compared to my old tl01 not as fast even when you play with the gearing my mate took his back to the local hobbyshop and part exchanged it for a racing toureg the cc off road thing much more fun even my heavily hopped up ff02 is fast has speed tuned gears from eagle racing and runs a lrp buggy special motor .tb02 had a 12x3 pro bb team orion motor in it .

My TB02 runs on pace with its EvoIII garage mates... could it be your settings/construction?

I got a tt01, i love it. That's maybe because its the only Tamiya i ever had. The screws are a problem, When you take em out ( i apparantly did somethjing wrong) But they won't fit annymore!! B). So i have placed bigger screws, because its plastic the screws have made there own hole :(. But i think the steering is quit good, comparing to a nikko. Talking about nikko's, i just broke one with my tt01 [;)]. BTW i bought my tt01 XB pro (assembled, everying included) for 230 euro

I got 2 TT01's. The BMW M3.

Mostly it was suppose to be a static model of my favorite car. But once I built it, well I had to run it.

The car has 0 adjustments stock, is not the best chassis for anything other then fun in a parking lot.

I have EVERY dam Hop-Up made for it. Total cost is around $400 so far, and it still doesn't drive like any of my other cars. Don't even THINK of running it on a carpet track, it just doesn't work, and the car breaks really easily! The good part, there are a TON of Hop-Ups and parts are SUPER cheap!

here is a little pic of mine before I put on the Titanium universal shafts and a bunch of GRP aluminum parts.

The front tire looks like that due me busting the brand new adjustable camber links. They break really easily. they have since been replaced.

wow, thats a pretty nice body! Ive got a tt-01, and for my first club racer, i think its pretty good, managed to keep up with the nitros [:D]

Please.. don't ever put a carbon hood on a BMW E30 M3..

That's a big no-no. Carbon bonnets are for JAPANESE plastic wagons, not for German quality machinery.

Aside from that, nice job painting the carbon pattern. What did you use? What I do is I use a rubber mat from a curtain/bedsheet-shop, which has lots of little holes in it, it's normally used to keep table-cloths from sliding around on boats and trains and such, and then I paint gun metal through the holes, followed by straight black backing.

Anyway, what sort of thing did you use, and where can you get it?

The bonnet isn't painted, its stickers and looks like a sticker too. You can get an A4 sheet from hobby stores, as his rear wing has carbon sticker on it too as does the front splitter.

Yes, that is my car.

The CF on the 1/10 is a cut to fit decal picked up from the hobby shop, it's 3 pc for the hood, and a PITA to do. Next time, I'll do the paint.

Back to the topic of the TT01, I can't see this car in ANY race except a TT01 spec race, it just handles so poorly compared to other cars.

I decided I should give the car a test-run before I sold it, and surprisingly enough it seemed to handle OK.

Actually it had just rained this morning and it was a bit slippery, so I got 4wd drifting as a bonus [:P]

I fitted a set of tyres with shaped inner foams and an Escort Cosworth body I just painted yesterday, p2k2 motor and a 21 tooth pinion.

I was very pleasantly surprised, I thought it would handle like a dung beetle, but I thought it was a better driver than a TA03F Pro actually.

I also replaced the steering linkage with a ball-link turnbuckle assembly, and shimmed all the step-screws, might be a bit of difference there.

I also took sandpaper to the ends of the suspension arms where they mount into the gear cases, to make them move more easily. I think there is too much binding there to begin with, so I think this will make a difference in the suspension characteristics.

Actually, I think I might keep it as a runner after all [:)]

My TT01 is my first tamiya but its pretty sweet, i raced my mates TA01 which was hopped up to the 9's with a graphite chassis and front one way diff and ball race bearings etc and i kept up with it, even had a bit more acceleration and that was totally stock, i now have the aluminium prophsaft it has more direct power and braking as the prop doest felx as much. with Gecko tires it shifts of the mark and has tones of cornering grip. the stock options are a little restrictive and don't have much adjustability but with the hop ups its all part of the fun of slowly building up your 1st car, plus i love my Skyline R34 Z tune shell, so much i bought 2 bodies :-)

C'mon guys :) If you want a top notch Tamiya shaft drive tourer you have to cough up for a TB Evo. The stock TB02 can be made into something decent but at a cost.

Tamiya is a very savvy commercial organisation and they got it just right with the TT01 because they specced it and priced it just right (even at inflated UK prices) to sell in the 1,000's to those punters who thought they were getting the doggy's doings AND with their favourite bodyshell. This chassis was not aimed at anyone who even half seriously would contemplate competition racing.

TT01 is a good design... yes it may look cheap & ****, but they run ok!

Best of all for all the newcomers, there's just about NO way of building it wrong.

Stripped screwthreads is about the only way to wreck the build.

My TT-01 is a top car. Its got just about every hop-up you can get..such as Tamiya, 3Racing and GPM products (including the titanium wheel shafts). Its fully ball raced, as is the steering, and has a Tamiya Sport Tuned RS motor in it and its now the fasted car I have. It ran rings around my old TA02-SW Porsche.

(OK. Its now nothing like the standard kit they sell.only the chassis. Ha ha) ;)

Id say its an ace car for coming into the sport without massive expense

...well done for pointing this out. It is the next logical step from the "toys" department stores sell, and the way alot of new guys & girls get into our hobby.

First of all, I'm glad ideal2k changed his mind, the build isn't a definitive indicator of how it runs. It's not over-engineered nor is it over-complicated. I would also like to point out that for the price of a Grasshopper or Lunchbox, you get a pretty sweet platform and like most agree, it's well-priced for inviting anyone to entry-level touring. While I'm not familiar with the vanilla TT-01 or TT-01R variants, I did purchase a TT-01D Supra last fall and for $130 USD I was pleased to discover it included oil dampers, ball bearings and a sport tuned motor. The adjustable upper arms and lower arm down-travel stops were also a welcome sight.

Count me as one :-) plus i just wanted a cool Skyline and to have a little tinker with the whole hop up and set up thing at a good price. im sure if i go more serious i would look at other options but for a level enrty model to have a blast here and there at my local club i love it.

try as i might i just cant kill my tt01. jumps, rallying,puddles the lot it just keeps on going it takes the abuse that i wont put my other cars though

I bought a TT01R and dropped 750.00 of electrics in it and then wore the chassis out,literally,i had the biggest crashes ever with an RC car and it was as tough as old boots.

IMHO it is a great car and in standard trim good value entry level RC kit for beginners,plus a cheap chassis to shelf all my loverly bodyshells on.
