Worst Crashes

Whats the worst crash you have had, what damage did it do and whats the funniest thing you've crashed into. I hit my metal BBQ that was in my shed haha,don't ask, and somehow broke the lower mount, of course now been replaced with alloy lol. :rolleyes:

I ripped the back axle out of a Opel Manta with a Vauxhall Astra GTE and ended up in someone's garden but that's another story ;-)

I've had a couple of real nasty crashes. The worst 2 were at really high speed and on the same weekend.

First was with my TA03F Pro chassis. I was flying up the road at full throttle trying out my new modified 11T double and a new set of slick tyres when the bottom eye of the rear shocked popped off as I braked. The car flung very hard into the gutter and tore the right rear suspension off. Was quite spectacular with parts flying everywhere. Done only minor damage to the body. 1/2 hour later I was driving again after raiding the parts bin for some more parts. Needless to say I now superglue most threads so I don't have a repeat of this one.

Second big crash for the weekend was a few hours later at the netball courts with my hopped up HPI RS4 Evo3 with the OS18CV-R fitted to it. I'd done several laps around the track we'd marked out. The car was performing beautifully and eating all the other cars on the track. There is a slight lip in the surface where courts 1 and 2 meet and the car bounces a small bit over it, right where you come onto the main straight. I had it nailed full throttle and it had just changed into 2nd gear when I seen an "AA" battery fly from under the body shell... Fail safe's don't work when there is no power and the car kept going at full throttle down the main straight while I watched in horror. It hit the grass at the end of the courts and flew through the air for about 15 feet and landed upside down in a pile of dead grass still peak revving (glad they mowed during the week and left all the clippings there). I've never run a 4 "AA" battery holder again and put a 4.8v pack into the car and never had the same problem again. Took me ages to clean all the dead grass from the chassis.

I've had a few high speed roll overs with the MambaMax in the cars but nothing has done any major damage, only very scratched body shells and some damaged pride.

It wasn't done by me but my neighbor got my Xray T1 ran over by a car http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...48638&id=34

I never let anyone drive my cars I can crash them all by myself lol, It was nice of your neighbour to give you the $$$ and for you to still be friends, I cant imagine the look on your face when it happened though, I bet the car that ran it over didn't stop either.

Wow Mark what a weekend that was, Ive got a 19t in mine but I was thinking of a Mamba Max setup but I think it would end up looking like the Dodge Charger from Fast and Furious, think Ill stick to my 19t, its more than quick enough for me.

Hitting a wall in our garden with my Blazing Star at full throttle. Trashed the front shock tower (broken in two), bent some screws, damaged both front shocks so they would leak a bit (still need to replace 'em), damaged the front gear case, cracked a rim, and caused some big scratches to one side of the front suspension. Thankfully that was with the stock 540...

The reason for it: not looking well and driving the car INTO the wall instead of along it.

Another memorable one was when one of the rear wheels came off after running on gravel in hot weather. The stock plastic wheel hexxes got so hot they changed shape and pushed off the wheel and wheel nut :o

Could you imagine a brushless, you may still be picking the bits up off the garden lol, this is why I don't think a brushless setup would be very good for me, I couldn't even avoid a shed with a 19t hahaha

I was running brushed motors when I had those accidents. Haven't had a serious one since switching to brushless.

You will get the bug soon enough Helen, 'Practice makes perfect' and that never ending 'Need for speed' will have you wanting more power in the near future... LOL!! I remember when I got my first Tamiya kit (TA02 Escort) I thought the silver can 540 was way fast, now look at me :rolleyes:

With my old Nikko evolution evo I went full throttle with the 'Sprint motor' fitted up a 4ft ramp, it promptly landed on a car bonnet and fell off onto the road snapped the front suspension arm. Glued it back and did it again, needless to say I now no longer have any suspension in that car what so ever

Yeah, but a had a much morse crash before involving a large pothole and the Falcon. Needless to say it weakend the Falcon and my Sister finished it.

It wasnt a crash, but when I did a front flip with my grasshopper it broke off my body post and everywhere else you put body clips on. Oh, and somehow shred my spur gear, too.

I took the body post off my Falcon when I wasnt used to its speed or its inverted steering (thanks dad :rolleyes: ). It barelled twice but it looke qute spectacular and it still ran so I wasnt too peeved. I want a runner not a shelf queen

Me.. a extreme low-speed crash

was maintaining/repairing a full option Globeliner.

Drove it off the desk by accident, with partly mounted cab & electrics hanging out of it.

Landed nose-first 90cm lower on a concrete floor.

-no damage- .. and, actually the electric problem i was having was solved.

But, never again please!

( yes guys, i am still around, bit insane at the job right now.. "i'll be back!" )

This was back in the day when we only had Acoms 27mHz systems and the country was flooded with ilegal American CB's (yes before mobile phones).

I had recently bashed my Superchamp into something large and heavy whilst racing a friend in the local skateboard park, This had stripped the servo and reduced the body work to a number of twisted blue plastic parts held together by the decals.

The front end was buckled and bent so a trip to the hobby shop was in order.

Because there were very few radio controlled cars out at this point the shop held spares on the shelf.

A body kit cost around 8, new servo and a complete front end and back to my little flat to rebuild.

After stripping and cleaning everything, like a good apprentice engineer is taught, The Superchamp was rebuilt with new parts and set up as best as possible on the table, full electronics test and now a road test.

Out to the back courtyard behind my flat and I started running the car up and down adjusting the servo trim etc to get it running in a straight line with no need for corrections on the stick.

It was at this point, where the car as just about there and confidence was high and therefore the car was moving fast, that one of he local CB enthusiasts decided to key his mike on 27mHz AM and bleed all over my little acoms signal.

The superchamp took a hard right and accelerated........................................... It stopped all by it's self by ploughing through a corrugated asbestos fence which reduced the body work to a similar state as the one already in the bin upstairs, the front end was a mess but the servo had survived!.

I wouldn't have minded if it was my fault.

This is one of the reasons I always use modern Radio regardless of tradition. I have an original acoms unit from around 1983 and it chatters and twitches and is all around rubbish as the range is short as well. It also seems to pick up every electromagnetic signal in the area.

That was my worst crash, well it was the one that hurt the most anyhow.

Well since I have been playing with RC cars for the past 25 odd years on and off I've had more crashes that I care to remember but a few memorable ones stick in mind.

Friends original release sand scorcher exploding into its component pieces after hitting a kerb at Hi speed, I think he had a larger pack and a technigold in it at the time. This has to be one of my fondest childhood memories, I can still see the wheels rolling off down the street <_<

My first car the tamiya falcon flying into the pond at home and the electrics never working again

My old Lazer ZXR at a club race, came down the straight at full speed and hit the benches we were using as a podium, took out both wishbones and ripped part of the brand new Cf chassis off :)

My 60+mph Mini-T (3 lipos + 8000RPM/v mamba) again bought to an early demise by another killer kerb. snapped chassis, buckled driveshafts, knackered ball diff, etc etc, basically an insurance write off.

Crashing my Mk1 Escort and writing it off also ripping a tendon off the bone on my thumb OUCH!

LOL. I hate to think of the parts I've destroyed in over 20 years of rc cars. Was fun at the time though I guess.

Many years ago I dabbled in some RC drag racing with a converted 1/12 delta pan car. It had a simple custom alloy chassis, with the 1/12 pod and front suspension screwed to it, folded body from lexan sheet. The rear tyres were the original 1/12 ones with larger insulation foam doughnuts glued over. It was nothing real pretty but gave the overall impression of a top fueller. It used to fly with a trinity 9 turn drag motor on 10 cells. :) Probably slow these days, but this was back in 1990.

Anyway one day I thought it would be fun to gear it for speed and see how fast it would go in the top end. It was a blur, would have had to be good for over 100kays until I hit a small rock on the road. The thing took off of the ground, flipped gracefully over backwards, landed, flipped, rolled, tumbled, and then slid down the road for a good 50-60 meters. Needless to say the chassis was was banana'd and slightly fubar after all that. Think I still have all the bits in boxes around somewhere....

Then I went through the stage of having fun on bmx tracks and skate bowls with one of my schumacher cats. :( Well it seemed fun at the time running a 13 quinn on 7 cells. Umm, clearing a BIG table top jump by about 4 meters and landing square on the rear of the car isn't real good for it. Broken wing, shock tower, suspension arm and severely bent motor shaft stopped my fun for the day. Those old cats are tough, but not that tough. Would hate to have seen what it would have done to anything tamiya from that era.

One thing I have learnt is not to let friends drive your powered up cars if they haven't had much driving experience. Once I gave a mate a drive of my fox which had a 17 turn motor in it and was fairly quick for a fox. Anyway he was doing alright until he planted the car full speed head on into a gutter, writing off a chassis and lower suspension arm in the process. :o I never offered him a drive after that.

I never had a car run over by a 1:1 scale one, but came close a few times. My old newman porsche 956 + technigold + extra 7th cell strapped in made for fun times dragging off cars driving past. A couple of times I ended up between the rear wheels of moving full scale cars, but got lucky. Lol that car used to get huge air jumping it over a smooth inclined gutter at the end of a cul-de-sac and landing on long grass. Poor thing. B)
