ive just found my 15 year old grasshopper in my mums attic that i thought i had lost or swapped many many years ago i am so overjoyed that i came across this again i even charged the battery and found it still runs after all these years but it seems slow and plus the rear end seems to bang when it hits a bump as if the rear shocks are had it.

all i wanna know is can u put a faster motor in it if so what motor should i buy plus i wanna put some new shocks on but i dont want the same sort that are on it i wanna put summat more modern if it can be done i would prefer to get front and rear shocks if possible......

thanks...... :P

Hi,

at first the shocks.

For the rear end you can mount the Hornet oil shocks. They work fine but you must buy the shocks and some plastic parts to mount them.

For the front end it's more difficoult because the were no oil shocks for this car. anyway you can mount something but need to mod your car someway to adapt them. I suggest to buy some 1/18 modern shocks. Their dimension could fit on your car, allthe rest is handjob.

For the motor you have now the RS380, very little.

You can mount a 540 but absolutelly need a Subaru Brat 18T black pinion gear.

What motor? The silver can 540 will push more and more your car than the 380.

A black Sport Tuned 540 will go faster.

A modded 27T/23T 540 will go moe faster.

Your problem is: will the Grasshopper keep the wheels on the ground with these motors? Expecially without oil dampers?

So I suggest to mount at maximum the Sport Tuned, then search for the dampers on www.ebay.com. When (and if) you will have the oil dampers you will switch to a faster motor but beleve me, the silver 540 is very good on this light car.

Some front oil filled shock kits were made many years ago for the GrassHopper (By Team CRP and Parma). They appear on Ebay on rare occasion and usually sell for $50.00 or more to the Tamiya collectors that want them (me being one of them). Mounting the rear Hornet Shock Kit also requires that you cut into the rear of the GrassHopper body so that the new shock tower extensions can fit properly around the body :( The easy way around this is to purchase the Parma GrassHopper Lexan replacement body (still on sale from www.parmapse.com). Their lexan body uses the Hornet body mounts and allows you to mount the Hornet rear shock kit without any concern about cutting into an ABS plastic body.

If you like having the original GrassHopper body with the driver, then Parma did make some rear replacement oil filled shocks (also many years ago) that were very slim and fit onto the stock mounts with no modifications. These can also be found on rare occasion through Ebay and usually sell for a lower cost than the front shock kits.

Here is a photo with both vintage front an rear shock kits from my showroom GrassHopper (I need to update my photos :P )

I believe those front shocks are made by You G (mine are at least and look the same) and not Parma (unless Parma copied them which is possible). The rears I believe are Parma.

Dr.Robotnik,

Good eye! The fronts are the You-G kit and differ in design only a little from the Parma set. The rear set are the Parma shocks, so you are 2 for 2 B)

I've only once ever seen the You-G front shock kit which I use on my Grasshopper (nice to know another TC member has a set - score!). I still see the Team CRP and Parma ones on rare occasion via Ebay.

I think Grasshopper's original shocks are not only unuseful for running but also terrible to see. Are still available some other cheap solutions, maybe based on existing Tamiya parts? I've already the rear Tamiya upgrade with oil filled shocks, I need something better for the front end.

Hi,

Sorry about that, I am selling a lot of vintage stuff at reasonable prices and things are tending to sell quite quickly. When I made the post they were still available. I may be able to sell you the Hot Trick version in a week or so, if you are still looking then give me a shout.

Cheers

Thanks Dan,

I am really into my hop-ups.

Keep an eye on my trades and ebay (id: edprest) if you are interested in this sort of thing as more stuff will be going up in the next few days/weeks.

Cheers
