Its raining! Help me, i want to make my car water proof but i just don't know how to put balloons over everything, its all atatshed (double sided tape) to the bottom, and not only that, the steer thing-box-thingy is screwed to the bottom (that must sounds wierd in england lol), So i can do a baloon over it but the bottom is still open... i mean the underside of the reciever/ESC/steer-thing-box-thingy is still open... and musn't the car steer??????

Hope i didn't blow your brains with confusement...

I think we need to accept that not all members are from countries where English is not first language. Thats fairly clear when you read it... I would hate to try and write in German/French etc.

THis is basically what he is asking

He wants to waterproof the electrics in his car but the reciever and esc are taped to the chassis and the servo is screwed to chassis too. If he puts balloons over these then the underside of esc/receiver and servo are still open to water damage.

Vroem you will need to take the reciever/esc off the chassis and then put them in the balloons then retape them to the chassis. I have always found with servos the best thing to do is to smear silicone (like the stuff you put round shower basins/ bath surround etc) round the joints and where the wires protrude from case. You will never make it 100% waterproof, thats the best you can do.

I have seen some people fit the esc and receiver into little plastic cases, which seems a good idea.

Bit rude isn't it??

Please don't forget that Tamiya Club IS an international club and some members don't speak english as a first language!!

Lol thats ok, when i don't know a word i try to eh.. here we go... Say it in more words [;)]. Annywayz, thanks for the info,

If the weather is like this right now, the grounds is not completaly dry, so when you drive some small drops can come on to the ESC/reciever, that ain't harm-full right??, it gets a bit muddy on the body.

Now i think of it... i never got dirt/Mud in my chassis, only the body, must of be because its a Bathtub-chassis.

Hi VroemVroem, I live in the north of England and it always rains here so we need to make sure we can run in wet conditions.

I would not run an ESC in the wet because they will get damaged - some will fail completely and others will work again after being dried out.

You can get waterproof ESC's from Mtroniks and others but generally they don't have the performance to match others such as Novak etc.

I try and build waterproof boxes where possible if the motor is not too powerful. However, if you are running a powerful motor the ESC will get hot and you need air to cool it. If you place it in a waterproof box or balloon it will overheat and burn out.

On my crawler I have used the box that the futaba RX comes in. This is big enough to fit the RX and the ESC. This truck doesn't generate much heat at all so there is no need for cooling.

a>

If your ESC tends to get warm/hot then you may need a fan like this, it is still splashproof and the ESC is safer than running with no protection at all. This is a CPU fan and it runs at 7500rpm which tends to throw the water back out!

a>

and here is another Futaba RX box used on a buggy

a>

The servo can be made waterproof by smearing vaseline/grease around the spindle and around the joints in the case.

The motor just needs some stocking stretched over the cooling slots/end bell. This stops dirt getting in but allows hot air to escape.

I hope this helps.

id="quote">id="quote">I think that "steer thing-box-thingy" sounds much more friendly than "servo" anyway [:)]. Like Biggus says, there's not many English people who would be able to post anything in Dutch..

Brilliant idea for the Futaba boxes M4f. I was thinking that there must be a good use for them, but after a while I decided there wouldn't be and chucked 3 of them in the bin. Typical [B)].

great minds think alike eh mud4fun? i got a futaba RX and have started making a 'mechanism' box for my TD, good job too, winter is coming and i would like my truck to keep running... although the weather seems our greatest enemy! Went out MTB'ing today, got plastered with mud but it was actually quite fun and found some great RC places! Here I come with buggy and truck in tow!

i do what biggus suggested and take the esc and reciever off the chassis, then ballon them and stick them back on.

Not only is mattijn dutch, but hes 14. Im 13 and can hardly write a word in french or german, and ive been doing it for a few years!

Well done for also learning some english slang! I bet they didn't teach you that at school!

I visit lots of website's and play english games so thats why i speak engish like dis.

I had a spin with my car yesterday, it was a bit whet outside (whet enough to make my car drift and lose controll). When i got back home i saw that my tires where all dirty, my body was dirty, the underside of my chassis was dirty... But the esc/battery/reciever/motor All where Clean and Dry!

As long as i avoid puddles and that kinda stuff, i can drive outside in the "a little bit whet". Thats really good for better your skills, because its hard to drive...

My esc doesn't get hot, but iam driving a powerfull motor, Purple bull, al least, i think its powerfull. Only think that gets hot is batterypack and motor..

Do you know Dutch? If not you shouldn't really be posting comments like this! [;)]

Some chassis have undercowls, perhaps you could adapt one of these to fit your own car?

What car is it anyway?

I was thinking about using the balloon idea, but the problem is then how do you stick the "ballooned" receiver back onto the body in a non permanent way [?]

Then it occurred to be maybe if you attach a piece of velcro to the outside of the balloon, with the corresponding bit of velcro on the body - that might work. That way its possible to waterproof the receiver and still stick it to the chassis - what do people think?

My ESC's are waterproof anyway, but with the idea of covering the motor with a piece of stocking, and sealing the servo with silicone sealant and a blob of grease, I think it would go a long way towards waterproofing things.

Only other thing is how to protect the battery packs and connectors - any ideas? I guess you could stretch a balloon over those too.... hmmmmm

Posted

you cant really do anything with battery, the waters only affect avter a while will corrode the wires connection onto battery... if these accessible a little bit of grease may be an idea.

And velcro is a great idea, I used to use those in my race cars... but prefer double sided tape.

undercrawlers?? thats probably undercovers, its a lexan cover that fits over chassis and keeps a fair amount of dirt/dust/water out of the chassis.

Velcro consists of two strips of nylon fabric. One strip contains thousands of small hooks. The other strip contains small loops. When the two strips are pressed together, they form a strong bond.

velcro is klitteband....

undercowls is een binnenkap, deze dient als bescherming voor je apperatuur.

had to help out a bit here... thanks guys for being understanding for Mattijn, I also think he really tries and shouldn't be attacked for not writing perfect English.

I'm sure this will help me, its allways helpfull when people not just go shouting when my engish is not perfect [;)].

I will never ride tru rain or something.

I dont think that iam the only TT01 driver here, annyone have some pictures how you got em waterproof??

mattijn

Yay, this is my 99 POST!

Martin - I think your english is very good [^]. As others have said, its better than my dutch / French etc... so there ya go [;)]

I have a TT01 Impreza WRC that I will probably be waterproofing soon. I think I will seal the servo with silicone and a blob of grease. My ESC is one of the waterproof MTronics ones anyway, so I don't have to worry about that. I think I will try the balloon and velcro idea for the receiver.

When I get round to it I'll try and put some pictures in my showroom.

Cheers,

Chris

Allright, just had a run with my car, its dry outside now, i think i'll go for the velcro idea.

What do you like the best? Driving on whet track (drifting ! [;)])

or on dry track?

Post it ;)

It rained, its al whet outside, so i made my car water proof!

My ESC/RECIEVER/SERVO are now on the chassis with velcro tape, i took them of the chassis, put a balloon over it, the wires via the opening to the motor/battery etc. And put some velcro tape on the balloon, and so i had to take it for a spin...

... This is GREAT FUN!!!! I love riding in whet terrain! Somewhat hard to drive somethimes ( had 2 crashes ;), but no damage ) but its great ;)

i weatherproofed the Twin Detonator today and took it out. It was pouring! I was driving along and found this large sand pile where they are builiding on the end of our drive, i reckon half of its still stuck to the chassis! Great fun. Didnt weatherproof the MSC (must upgrade!) dut cling film and taped the battery and put a ballon plus tie wrap around the reciever, MSC stopped play however, im currently saving for a Speedmaster Silver Star Ultra (£52) and I'm still making a box for reciever and ESC out of the Futaba Rx box. (like M4F's idea)

I also ended up running one of my cars in the rain today, my Pajero at New Brighton on sand with a few TC members and some other guys. I decided to throw caution to the wind and rely on the waterproof speedo and hope that the servo or reciever didn't pack up. I was lucky[:D] Cheers to 4-0 for taking the pics[^]
