i just had the best lunch hour ever! i took my brand new 1/8 scale (rc8be) to the local bmx track for it's first drive.

OMG thats the most fun i ever had with an rc. this thing can fly so far and so high something has to break, but it doesn't.

i was atleast 30 feet off the ground, flying 60 or more feet....and landing it and hitting the next jump. it's amazing how much you can correct when you spend that kind of time in the air.

1/8 scale is my new mistress!

btw henk, you know where your last post is going. lol

I missed the end of a few auctions - not happy Jan! :)

Placed an order for some 2.4GHz radio gear and a couple of LiPo's.

Hopefully it arrives in time for next weekend. I want to go for a bash! :D

This morning finished off the madcap rear wishbone conversion of my Astute - found some original Clodbuster extended brass balls and 5mm rod ends in the parts box so happy chappy. Reassembled gearbox n motor, got the Conrad disc wheels and spike tyres on, powered it up and the steering was the wrong way round .

Wasn't ike that on its maiden voyage so reversed the channels on the vintage acoms TX, only to find the motor now running and the steering the same as before !

Swapped over to a newer Acoms Techniplus handset, no different initially although reversing the channels sorted the steering but now has the throttle control working wrong way !

Think i'll go reprogramme the old Futaba MC112B esc before i go any further and maybe try another Xal set.

Whilst its no shelfer it actually looks pretty good and the thing flies (although the Reedy 14x4 motor is going to limit the life of the old Futaba esc)

I finished converting my Dirt Thrasher into a TA01. All i need to do is stick some radio gear in it and paint the Mk1 Escort body and it'll be sorted then

Put 6 hours in on making he gearboxes for the steel king tiger. Got the basic frames finished, still got 4 blocks of metal to machine before the front gearboxes are done. Also got to move the holes in the baseplate as the heads of the screws that attach the frames to the baseplate make the gearbox to wide to fit in the tank by about 0.5mm. Doh. Also got to buy a boring head off ebay so that I can create accurate holes to press bearings into. After all that I've still got the motor mount plate to make as well the reduction gear and the drive shafts. I'll be pleased to get the thing finished so that I can get out and run some cars while the weather is nice.......

So, what have you done today ?

It rained all day yesterday....

so of course I took my Dirt Thrasher with Bigwig body out for its second ever spin... I thrashed the buggy around on tarmac on the road in front of my parents house, this thing goes like a rocket!! :P its only standard gearing and motor, but with a brand new set of oval blocks in the wet it was soon spinning and drifting all over the place!! Span out lots, a few more 360 spins that surprised me, and big rooster tails of water plumes !! :P;)

Ran it until the first 1700 battery went flat, and then gave up because the receiver started to get a bit glitchy as it was not waterproofed at all  [oops]

great fun though and cant wait to take it out again!

so... what have you been up to today?

reprogrammed the ESC this morning and all seems well again, not sure why the steering went awry but its fine now !

Ran two packs through the Rising Storm with my son outside the house, won't be long before new rear tyres are called for

Got the Clod Spider out, but after 5 seconds the plastic adaptor in the alloy servo arm decided it couldn't cope with transmitting the servo outputs to the heavy alloy beadlock wheels, so stripped itself. New all alloy one ordered from ebay :P

Not a bad RC day so far.

Today has been a day of discovery.

I discovered just how much fun a relatively stock Mad Bull is.

I discovered that both my E-Firestorm and ORV Bitsa are massively undergeared.

I discovered I didnt make a very good job of soldering the wires on to the 17.5T brushless motor that I fitted to the Sand Scorcher. It's stuttering more than a teenager in a chemist trying to buy his first packet of condoms.

So what have you done today?

Drove over to Birmingham to collect an eBay Fighter Buggy RX which turned out to be a silver-bodyshelled one.

Have had a busy afternoon swapping motors round.

Blitzer Beetle 8.5t Brushless -> ORV Bitsa: The smaller buggy wheels on the KBF gearbox on the Bitsa drastically reduced the gearing and made it a little underwhelming. The 8.5t in the Blitzer was realistically a bit much - turned it into a mental wheelie monster. It's now got a 13.5t in there. Should still go well, but steering might now be a realistic possibility.

DF02 Monster Cuda 8.5t Brushless -> HPI Firestorm: Again, the Firestorm stock comes with a 15t brushed motor, so the gearing is crazy low. I did try a 13.5t brushless in there but even that was too slow. The 8.5t is enough without being mad. Again, the MC is a DF02 with 2.2 monster truck wheels and Proline Dirt Hawgs.. 8.5t is just a notch too much. It's the only time I've ever managed to wheelie a 4WD car (albeit on tarmac)

Twin 13.5 Brushless from Mod Clod: One 13.5t went into the Blitzer as above, the other one is going into the Mad Bull. I had such a lot of fun with the 'Bull today that I'm going to make it one of my main runners and that demands LiPo power and a brushless motor. I did try a DT01 ages ago with an 8.5T brushless motor and that was just daft. So much torque twist through the gearbox made it more or less undriveable. This version tho has slightly smaller wheels, and a slightly less bonkers motor, so I think it should go pretty well.

The Mod Clod is now going back to the brushed 550s that were in it before hand connected up to a Mtronicks Storm X ESC that includes a LiPo BEC. Main reason for this is that with the twin ESC set up it was never reeeally synced properly despite my efforts. I'll probably look at putting some slightly warmer brushed motors in there to give it a bit more oomph, but we'll see how it goes with the 550s. I'm also going to change the body shell AGAIN, although I think I've found a shell that fits it absolutely beautifully.

I have a car that is going to be made into an "Evo" version with a few subtle changes, and that will involve replacing and repainting its current shell. The old shell will be stuck on the Mod Clod. Both versions will look like they've been carved from the purest awesome :D

I ordered a Holiday Buggy 2010 w/out esc for £65 today, at that price I couldnt resist and the cash was just sitting in my paypal account... you know how it is. It'll be my first completely new Tamiya build for almost 10 years! Just felt like a brake from bringing ebay wreakers back from the dead. Bearings are also on the way. It should arrive tomorrow so I plan to build it stock (+ bearings) and then see what I want to upgrade from there. Im guessing 540 + steer pinion at least will be on the cards before the weeks out ;) .

All I have to do now is get it past the wife...

Spent the day working on My Optima Mid project. Had intended to just install the steering servo so I could bolt down the top deck, but discovered the supplied servo to be completely dead.

A rummage around in my parts bin came up with an old Futaba servo originally from a King Cab MSC that worked just fine, and as a bonus already had a servo horn fitted that would match my needs for the Mid. Fitting it meant I had to dig around again in my HPI parts for a rod end, and unscrew the steering assembly from the chassis. All sorted, I went to put everything back together only to discover the threads in one of the servo saver posts had been completely stripped.

It seems the original owner had been a bit too strong and taking it apart had loosened the copious amounts of threadlock that had been keeping it together.

*sigh* A NIP set of posts has been sourced.

Thinking about a problem I ran into yesterday, my Fighter Buggy and also my Kyosho mini (both electric powered) seem to have the same problem.

I Drove about 2 meters away then I lost control over the car, I had to ran after it, to my luck nothing was broken. The mini uses 40mhz transmitter and the Buggy 27Mhz. I do not have any of those problems with my other cars..... are my old Transmitters junk??

Also Im thinking about how to get some suspension parts for my anicent Tamiya Astute buggy......

Check that the receiver aerial cable is 1m long and not shortened, and that it does not run close by where the motor is. Check that the motor has at least 1 suppression capacitor on each side and preferably a third going to the can from the terminals. Check the crystals. I once had a faulty RX crystal and my Frog went out of control. Check TX cells individually. Check that RX aerial is not being bared and conducting onto metal aerial mount and then onto graphite chassis (happened on my Top Force LOL). Also check TX crystal.

Other than those general checks there's not a lot else it can be except for faulty RX or TX.

I can control my Frog with my old Acoms MK3 about 100m from me in either direction up or down my street with perfect control on 27MHz AM.

Cheers,

Alistair G.

Thanks for your suggestions.

It seems that I have to deal with faulty cristals since I changed the ones in my Buggy its all fine now like many years ago. I also will apply an suppression capacitor since it doesent have one.

I will try some new cristals for the Kyosho Mini tomorow, hopefully that solves the problem also.

Cheers

Lukas

Removed brushes from used TZ motor from ebay - comm looked fine and brushes too, less than half worn. added oil to bearings, took off badly soldered cables and replaced with new. Looks great for £9 :)

New alloy servo arm arrived for my Clod project, so fitted that and set steering. Added some flightmax in line connectors to Traxxas ESC leads, fired it up with twin lipos and had a ball outside the house for 25 minutes B) B)
