More this week than today. I had a go at etching and then filling it with acrylic paint. A little rough, but has potential, have to learn how to clean up afterwards a bit better.

I have also been wanting to try laser cutting HIPS (its a plastic very similar to the Evergreen product that is used to scratch building). Now I get two weeks off over Christmas, which should be time enough to build a car. Last year I was able to do the Wild Willy 2, so this year I settled on the re-re Audi A4 STW BTCC. I'm not going to start the car yet, but was hoping to hop it up a little, so I tried cutting and etching an Audi A4 BTCC grille and the backend of some light buckets using 1.5 mm HIPS.

With the light buckets, I first hand cut one, and then pulled it apart, scanned the pieces and laser cut a new one, and re-trimmed. I'll then re-scanned those parts and do another version or two. This way I have all the pieces on file and can cut more for two used Audi bodies that I wanted to add light buckets too as well. So first rough version followed by laser cut version. I'll do the rear light buckets the same way.

Spray painted and test fit. It'll need some details on the lens to look better, but I'll worry about that when I paint the body.

Finished the mechanical and electronic aspects of my wife's RWD 4WS M-03 teapot racer and put a Kamtec Morris Minor van shell on it.

2019-11-05_02-36-18

Next steps will be to make it resemble a teapot like mine:

When I first saw your Teapot build I thought it was a just because thing, (very well done though I must say) but Teapot racing is actually a thing then?? How the badword do you keep a straight face and concentrate on what your doing with all those teapots buzzing around?  Must be a lot of fun ;)

Teapot racing takes the form of a time trial around an obstacle course, so typically only one teapot is buzzing around at any given time. That said, many people don't even bother trying to keep a straight face. It is hardly the most serious form of racing, and for many the fun is in the build and the taking part rather than winning or losing.

@TurnipJF

Do races only take place mid-afternoon?

Is racing banter known as 'hob-nobbing'?

Is cake given out as prizes?

Love this idea, sounds like great fun.

I really think you should have jaffa cakes for wheel trims - it's the only decent thing to do

Some good ideas there!

I have yet to race around a track made of rich tea biscuits, however the obstacles are often tea and biscuit themed. For example the slalom pylons are often candlesticks with teacups balanced on top. There are often biscuits balanced on end that need to be knocked over like skittles. One track had a water hazard full of tea.

Races do typically take place mid afternoon, but also sometimes in the late morning around 11:00.

Vehicles often feature tea related details. Biscuits as hubcaps is a popular one, as are mice and octopuses as drivers due to the Mad Hatter and Steampunk connections respectively.

I have yet to receive cake as a prize, but it is often used to bribe the judges. I did receive a jaffa cake shaped medal once though. 😁

That’s great @TurnipJF. It must even better that the wife is getting involved 👍🏻
Also please tell me there is some YouTube footage of these events.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to buy a Lunchbox, cut some slots in the top, add some knobs on the side, paint it silver then start some Toaster Racing 😉

With the teapot racing, they have to race round a track made of Rich Tea biscuits.

First place trophy is made of scoans with jam n cream.

Second is a half empty tin of quality street

Third is a jam butty.

There are many, many YouTube bids of teapot racing, typically from New Zealand (where the sport originated), US and UK meets, as well as other countries where tea is enjoyed.

There are also other variations on teapot racing, such as teapot Sumo in which you need to push your opponent out of a ring, and teapot sheep dog trials where the idea is to shunt a plush toy sheep into a pen before your opponent.

Toaster racing is a new one to me, but I have heard of hat racing, which is similar to teapot racing but with a larger size allowance for the vehicles. (Teapot racers have to be able to fit in a box 30cm by 30cm by 40cm in order to be race legal.)

I had no idea, I assumed it was a British thing but it looks like it was started down here, in Oamaru of all places, and its a steampunk thing.  Which makes sense it started in Oamaru as that is the Steampunk capital of New Zealand.  Actually went there last summer and loved the town, I would happily move there (and that was before I knew about teapot racing) but my wife pointed out we were there in the middle of summer and its very far south and would be freezing in winter.  I'd need my big coat, or maybe a bigger coat.

But now googling it there are races all over the place, typically in small towns (sorry Palmy, you're a small town) and none that close to me.

Because of the frequent rain, it took 3-4 weeks to paint 2 body shells.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint, and Citroen 2CV Rally.

Once again, window trims were drawn with a silver Molotow pen from inside.

ob6GHef.jpg

3 layers of red.

qKQJfdN.jpg

I didn't want deep red.  I wanted it brilliant Italian red. So I sprayed camel yellow a couple times under red.

(That was the only yellow I had. Besides, regular yellow was more expensive--I'm cheap.)

FOaPXau.jpg

Backed with white twice.  That's enough for Giulia Sprint. No black this time.  (In hind thought, it was opaque enough after yellow. It didn't need white)

2CV only has brilliant orange and white.  It still needs more paint.

Going well despite the weather @Juggular, those Giulia's are a nice body shell. Did you do anything with the slight crack you had in yours?

Replaced a few knackered parts on my Bush Devil. The 55mm screw pins took a hammer & punch to remove! The rear cups were rust welded in with the bearings... Nice E4 body mount from Shapeways, more solid than the original, hope it lasts.

next time I dunk a car in the sea I’ll strip it down immediately

I'm humbled that you remembered.

2CV came with a reinforced tape, quite conveniently for Giulia Sprint.  I think I'll just use it.  It seems simpler than shoe glue.  And on the outside, I'll just put a scrap clear sticker.
