Don't whatever you do!

They're like little, tiny, relatively affordable**, Tamiya jewelry. Particularly when you get carried away with the hop-ups https://d7z22c0gz59ng.cloudfront.net/cms/img/usr/inst/parts/T301_PARTS_CATALOG.pdf

They're just so stupidly funny to drive.

Oh please do that. And have the rat holding a Go-Pro and post the vid. That would be awesome. :)

**This might not necessarily be true. It's possible to buy far too many hop-ups. Even useless ones.

Apparently.

Hmmmm, My wife enjoyed building the Comical Frog, I wonder if she might like one of these for xmas?

Knocked together the M06 chassis today.  Other than a steel pinion, hi-torque saver, dampers, and ball head damper mounts in the rear, it's stock.

Still needs electrics installed but I need to check over a couple of things as well.  There's a large amount of front negative camber and toe out.  Seems excessive for stock settings.  One side in the rear is a couple of millimeters higher than the other with less toe in.  Turnbuckles would have been smart things to order before building.  Odd inconsistencies are annoying.

Yes the stock toe settings are definitely off. I had to adjust the steering links a bit before the wheels would even be close to pointing straight ahead.

Fixed the falcon steering with some parts I had laying around. No more bump steer, sharper steering and better alignment ! Also made a custom battery holder because this runner didn’t come with one.

Thanks! :)

They are yes. 1mm for the driver, 2mm for the trike body.

The Avante Black Special makes me think of Tron for some reason too. I did like that film.

Nice, I too am building my 2020 TS these days! Now that you've closedthe gearboxes, does everything mesh OK for you? diffs and gears smooth enough? I'm curious to know, as in my case it didn't work with the 1150s. Being just a hair thicker than the washer+plastic supplied, along with the horribly moulded bevel gears it just made it all way too tight, to the point that I wasn't able to turn anything by hand. I had to take everything apart, carefully shave the lumps off the bevels and rebuild with the thrust washer. Now everything seems smooth enough, but it did take the extra work to achieve that. Been wondering if it's been like that for many others or just for some.

When carefully reading the instructions again, I eventually convinced myself that the thrust washer is alright in there, no real need for a bearing when the shaft is already supported by two 1150s. But still, Tamiya supplied almost all the bearings so I think that at that point they should have also supplied three proper thrust bearings!

Anyway, I'd like to hear how that went for you :)

The rear seems fine, once overcoming the motor resistance. The front doesn’t seem so great, bit lumpy. I was going to leave it till I had them connected by the prop shaft etc and under power. However now you’ve got me thinking it still should be a bit better than it is. I did try to clean up the bevel gears before they went in, the did seem ok though. Shame if the 1150s don’t work really.

If everything turns fine than I would just leave them on, I might have been overthinking it, and apparently you wouldn't be the first one using the 1150s without a problem.

Mine still isn't so great either, rear diff still has a little tight spot even after cleaning the bevel gears. I expect it to get better once they bed in with a few runs.

I think I'll be taking the Lunchbox for another walk later. It's been very handy lighting the way for me when I walk and today there is an immense amount of fog going on too, the photo doesn't do it justice even with the comparison.

I'm honestly getting great enjoyment out of it and my Big Boss.

Ah so you got it up and running?

I remember that thread you had.

I've been all over the place. If you remember I got a Big Brute with bo body and Impreza wheels but then I came across as Corvette in better shape so started working on that. Then I saw a Doubke Dare cheap so got that and THEN I was offered a USA-1 for 50 quid 🤣🤣

The logical thing would be to have the USA-1 up and running and I guess maybe one of the 2wd ones but as usual it's been sat on the dreaded back burner for ages. I think I rebuilt most of the USA-1 so hopefully I'll get that running in the not too distance future.

Not sure what 2wd to keep though. I have pretty much everything for the Brute apart from the body shell and wheels (even have all the body accessories) but those parts are really hard to find for a non-ridiculous price. The Corvette has the body and wheels but is missing other parts.

I was reminded today, that I should stick to making shelf queens and not try to get them to run.....

I'd recently rebuilt and refurbed a Technigold motor, which I decided to connect up to test before putting in my UberBoomer. Some glowing red contacts and smoke later I decided it wasn't quite right.....

Undeterred, I thought I'd tweak the tracking on the CR-01 as I'd now got that to have 4WS. There it was, sat on the bench behaving itself, then I just nudged the throttle slightly, upon which it crawled back an inch, then there's a lot of ticking from the ESC, smoke, before it fires off backwards at full speed, smoke pouring from the ESC. I manage to disconnect the lipo and throw the car outside where it soon stopped smoking and calmed down. Pulled the ESC from the car and found it has melted what i guess is the potting (black sticky liquid.) Never had an issue with it before - ran a treat only a week or so ago (it's a proper Hobbywing Quicrun 1060)

I'm sticking to painting from now on - far less hazardous to my health and wallets' health.....:(

That sort of thing doesn't happen to them if they are nicely tucked away in plastic boxes 😜

More night time Lunchbox driving. Really pleased with the lights. I think I can get more out of the Cree ones on the roof though, I was quite modest with the resistors I chose and they are cold to the touch after an hour of running. I think they could handle a bit more oomph. The Nichia ones in the headlights get a bit warm already though so I think I'm getting everything I safely can from those.

It's not an exact science which I didn't realise at first. You'll pretty much always be safe running a 5mm white LED on 3.2v and 20ma for example but some can handle a fair bit more.

But the really tricky thing is that you even get massive variance in different examples of one type so two of the same model LED but from different batches might show the same brightness when one is at 3.3v and the other is at 4v! If you're a large bulk buyer you can buy LEDs which have been "binned" ie they have been sorted into groups with similar characteristics but for an average Joe like me buying them from somewhere like RS components, I have no idea which parameters will give the safest maximum performance.

You can go modest and be safe but that will likely lose you a significant amount of performance. But if you go too far, you can end up overdriving them and the lifespan could be significantly shorter. Some brands handle over driving better than others which is another variable. One thing working in my favour is that I probably only have the lights on a few hours per month at the most so even if I shorten their lifespan by 50% its not going to be a major issue because you're still talking hundreds or thousands of hours of useful life. Anyways, enough LED rambling lol. It's just one of those frustrating things where it seems like it should be simple but it turns out there's so many variables and it's so difficult to get consistency and accuracy.

I went with the Super Mini CVA dampers and guessed what settings would work rather than look it up.  I think I've got them ok for now.  2-hole pistons, large internal spacer, short damper arm in the back with stock fluid and springs.  3-hole pistons, large internal spacer, short damper arm in the front with stock fluid and the yellow (medium) short springs that came with the dampers.  I expect to use them on-road until the Escort body is released and I can make some changes for rally.

I might order some M-Grips for the front instead of the stock rear S-Grip and front radial combination.

M06 is coming along good 😊

Did you trim the upper arms as per the manual? Another member missed this too, and had the same issues. It will knock 4mm per side off the positive camber. Will also change your toe out as well.

No time or energy for Tamiya this weekend.

Few jobs round the house, last set of tax organised and set the wheels in motion for a new tenant for a rental property.

No special fee offer from eBay this weekend meant the HCT is staying a little longer, ordered a cheap lighting kit from China and have decided to try my hand at painting the rear light lenses next.

Didn’t bid on the lovely Top Force that was sold, kinda regret it but it’s for the best 👍

Yup, that's exactly what it was.  All fixed now.  Watching too much television and not paying enough attention to the manual.

I also had to move the top of the rear dampers a notch inwards too after a test fit with the rally blocks.  There was barely a millimeter left between the tyres and the springs.  Made a rough start on trimming the body last night in the hopes of sunny dry weather for painting this weekend.

Following a satisfactory result in the last Postal Racing challenge, I decided to give some tlc to my Manta Ray.

I winterized the electronics, not too pretty to look at but works a treat, every time!

20201130-195707.jpg

...and gave her brand new pin spike kicks, which should last a while on the snow (and if not, I have a few more sets)

20201130-153141.jpg

I would have ran her too, but it started pouring rain and everything got way too splotchy so for today I'll just enjoy that wonderful new tire smell 🤪

I bought a MB off of Ebay. I tried to resist. I failed. It looks to have been a good deal.

I pulled the trigger on 2 LIPO batteries, alarms and a fireproof bag.

1st time for LIPO looking forward to the upgrade.

And an alloy wheelie bar for the HCT as it’s staying for now 💥
