Mate, that looks like a nightmare to apply. Looks like you've done a top job though👍

Did you use water? Or just straight in with a hair dryer?

Soapy water and hairdryer.

I have now applied two decals.

This is a good exercise in patience.

And half an hour later:

Four!

Sheesh.

Time for a beer.

Tonight I just finished the masking on my first touring car body (Exotek type A, some Honda NSX clone).

Colors will be silver, white, black and a touch of fluo red. I hope it will come out OK. Will post pictures in the next days.

This is why I so often avoid box art :P Great job though and looks worth the effort/patience!

I found the time to paint the Fantom between work and house stuff.   Decanting definitely needed for the rear fins, but wasn't bad at all.

Going to paint the driver next.  :D   the black visor (?) is PS smoke.

It's my first Tamiya box art attempt in 35 years!

I really wanted to do this one in particular, so I bought a runner shell (Kamtec Escort) alongside the kit and got that going first. I think I might make a habit of doing just this. Take the time pressure off any body work I really care about. Used and abused TC shells incoming. Repro Optima Mid shell in stock (proper ones are very pricey).

Wanted: an unloved (but still something I like at least a little bit) 225mm wheelbase shell...

Stunning. Do you spray a little out of the can and then brush paint it?

Nice one Willy, when you say decanting, did you apply the paint by brush into the fins?

Today I have applied a decal. One sole single solitary decal.

20230118_205919

It was like applying a decal to The Alps.

One could say that is because, in a motorsporty way, the Lancia Delta is the Alps

Exactly one year ago these days I was doing the same thing (while up in the Alps, btw)! I took my sweet time with mine, and ended up actually enjoying the process (not to mention the result, you'll see how stunning it becomes at the end 👌). It gets easier after a while, especially if you do a little every day so you keep your flow. I did mine with hair dryer only, no soap, but I'd be curious to try it one day.

I found the front bonnet decals, the big ones, to be by far the hardest to apply properly. Not to freak you out, just a heads up on what I thought to be more challenging.

It requires indeed a lot of patience, but well worth it.

@Ferruz that is one well used manta ray? I think it can qualify for the taxi of the rc buggy world:lol:!  Does running it in the extreme cold affect the plastic?

After years of running the cars in extreme temperatures (up to +35 °C🔥 and down to -30❄, I feel it's safe to say that the cold has not affected the plastics ever, not on my Manta Ray, not on my other buggies, and not even on my 30+ y old Big Boss which sports plastics from the late '80 🤔😀

I'm well aware that many people see cold as an issue for running RC, and that some have reported plastics cracking and such things, but it was never the case for me, not one single time. During her by now almost 4 years of life, the Manta sure went through a few parts, upgrades and replacements, but it was all due to extensive use, bad landings or crashes; after all I drive it all the time and I don't go easy on it so I think she's allowed a few 😅 now the body shell is screaming for a facelift, but that will probably happen later on whenever I do the full restoration I have in plan. New chassis and gearboxes, and most of all M3 screws in many places that need them. Funny thing is, since I started mentioning it the car hasn't skipped a beat 😄 so I'm in a sweet spot of enjoying it without much sweat or worry, I'll take it until a crash will inevitably break this delicate balance!

But seriously, in my humble opinion don't worry about running in the cold! Water, sand and salt are terrible, but frost is your friend (just avoid hard crashes)

Thanks!  Yes, I sprayed into an empty receiver bubble pack and brush painted it, then hair dryer at low heat, x10 or so and then just sprayed the rest.  I did back with white as I did not want the smoke bleeding through.

This is how far I got today.  :D

Today I did some damage to my bank account via RCmart.

I'm excited about the radio. It now feels like I'm officially back into the hobby.

Yep, I didn't think it was possible to get full coverage with just the can so brushed on first.

Yep, Gavin on RC Kicks had some issues with the backing coat showing through there didn't he. Such a good idea to brush it in first on those deeply recessed areas, how do avoid visible brush marks?

Oops.. actually I haven’t checked his clip yet!

Polycarbonate paint is easy in that regard.. I just keep stacking paint and the brush marks will be completely hidden.  Even if the paint runs, it doesn’t matter.. just keep adding more paint on top until it all evenly covers the body.  I suppose using a soft bristle brush could help, but I just used a regular bonehead cheapo fan bristle brush as I don’t have polycarbonate paint thinner, I did not feel like using an expensive brush.     I tossed the brush once complete.  :D

Just about completed my Hornet Mario Kart today. Still a couple of little things to do such as painting the spot lamps but the biggest task is to find a small Lipo as a standard won’t fit since I cut 40mm out of the chassis!

When we actually run it we won’t have it so “slammed”, that’s just for photos!

Will post more in the pictures only thread later.

I’ve put a load in the pictures only thread but can take more if there’s anything specific you want to see.

I have to say that the hornet chassis and the toy parts fit so well. Everything pretty much lined up just right. Got lucky I think!

My son says it needs to get upgradeable like in the game! So we are working on a rear wing that can articulate!

EDIT: I could put a mini build thread together over the weekend with more progress pics as I did it.

That would be awesome, I wonder if you could have a micro servo linked to rear wing so you have a DRS.

Or a little box that opens up, so you can drop banana skins out the rear? That would be pretty epic.

You think like my son! My plan (not his) is to stay simple so I knocked up a wing mount that can pivot back and forth and up and down a little on arms and the wing angle itself can be moved. But all by hand not by servo.

Also, you can’t currently have the wing and the exhausts fitted so I’m going to have to do something more like in the game where the wing is really a glider that sits much higher.
