So, What Have You Done Today?

Took the heavily modded Boomerang and widened BBX for a little run with my son. 

First test on gravel and bumps for the Boomerang. It drives very nicely. A little tail happy but takes rough ground like a dream. In the end both cars got stopped by lack of thread lock on a screw, but it was dark by then and the batteries were about done. These two are great home bashers.

Today i built the dampers for my XV-02RS on XM-01.

Finished my Super Avante body today. I had planned on shooting parts of it in florescent yellow to match the wheels but it would have cost around $12 for a little can of Tamiya paint to do it and that irritated me. So it sat under my bench and I even put it up for sale for a bit to no avail. I dug out an old can of blue to finish it off. Its not a great contrast to the existing metallic blue that I had already sprayed. I guess the paint job is...serviceable.

The Transpeed is a 4.5T, It should fly, or at least be similar to my top speed TC01 which has a 3.5 but slightly slower gearing.

I actually took both out today for some RBP practice laps. They had different tires, motor turns, gearing was close, but ESC/radio/receiver/servo/battery were all the same. The TC01 has a much smaller turning radius and very nimble, tight turns are way easier and the car responds to every input quicker so kinda felt like I was doing a million mph and on the edge of losing control compared to the F201. The F201 took more effort to get through the tight turns but was much easier to have a nice smooth lap. Lap times were probably about the same (didn't time them) but the F201 looked like I knew what I was doing and the TC01 looked like it was being driven by a 3 year old , and the TC01 was the last car I took out so I was comfortable with the track by then.

I think the gentle contrast between the blues is classy.

I tried to find out what I need to convert an XM-01 into an XM-01B, i.e. into a buggy. Basically, you need all the XV02 suspension parts. 

According to my calculations, the parts I still have to buy will cost around €60. Since my annual RC budget is already exhausted, my XM-01B is more of a future project. But you can always dream a little... 🙂

Speaking of dreams: Does anyone have an idea for a suitable buggy body?

It's a rather short (m-chassi) tub chassis. I'm not worried about the attachment, but the chassis should be completely covered if possible. 🤔 I would be very happy to hear your suggestions!

Added Fighter Buggy RX reproduction stickers to my TT-02 Raikiri body (even though it's not a buggy, just going for Tamiya colors), and more recently over the weekend, finished painting the M-05 Mazda MX-5 Roadster body with Lame Flake, Black and Metallic Blue, with Translucent Yellow for the front lights and Translucent Red for the rear lights. With the flash lighting from the camera, the sparkles really shine. Both will be runner bodies.

I shortened the motor leads and tidied up the servo and esc wires on my TT02R. One of these days I'm gonna spring for the servo lead crimp tool so I can get super anal about the electronic installations. Oh course I had to test run it on the wet parking lot to make sure it was sorted out. I know there are nicer kits out there, ok, much nicer but the TT02 is such a nice driving chassis.

Took the TT02R to a new basketball court today to test it out. When I built the kit, I installed TRF shocks borrowed from my M08 but honestly they kinda felt like they didn't belong on the '02. When I took the chassis out of storage I decided to install the stock CVA's and honestly I like them more as they just seem to fit the car's personality better. My original intent when I bought the car was a "set and forget" car without any bells and whistles, just something to blast around with. Anyway the car drove very well and the court was fantastic. This time year in Connecticut, it's hard to find a place to run without acorns, twigs and leaves all over. The last place I tried to run it was covered with goose crap and let me be the first to tell you that you don't want any of that action. I am very happy with the way the car came together, I just need to put a few decals on my Raikiri and call this one done. I will one day put another Subaru body back on it because everyone knows Subarus are the best cars for New England.

I’ve been a bit out of the loop lately, but today my daughter visited a hobby shop for a tin of PS paint while she was close by. She sent a photo asking if there’s anything else I needed, so I circled a few…

Also managed to make a bit of headway with turning a Terra Scorcher into more Scorcher. It’s been fighting me a bit body wise as it’s my first attempt at re-shaping slightly for a change. Initially I tried heating the rear wheel arches to bend up the ends around a timber form I’d cut out. One side went OK but the second started going a bit wobbly and out of shape. Trimming them down and some filler has got it back to an acceptable state. A relief now it’s Primed. I almost feel it was becoming a candidate for Tim Shaw & Fuzz Townsend on Car SOS show,

I also found some of last tins of Dupli-colour automotive paint I can use on this in a regional shop not long ago. It’s a bit of pest it’s been discontinued here.

There was a nice Dark Blue that I’ve used on a Fighting Buggy body from Mr Toyolien 😁

Cheers, seeing the Bug in a kinda weathered look with the primer part rubbed down and the white grinning through I was in 2 minds about leaving it like it and just squirting some flat clear over it 🤔. Could be another project later.

While I am still on my TT02 kick I decided to do some maintenance which I guess is appropriate as the car is about a year old. I rebuilt the universals, put moly lube on the gears, ensured the drive train mesh did not have any excess backlash and put it back together. I did discover something odd though. When I built the kit I remembered not being able to get one of the screws fully seated that held the rear bumper on. This is because I tried to instal the screw without bumper. That meant the screw was a bit long and would not fully seat....so I tried to make force it. Once I realized the screw went in after the rear bumper it fit like a charm. When I tried to force the screw in, it left a slight bump inside the diff case that was rubbing on the diff. It wasn't rubbing enough to damage the bevel gear but enough to make a slight racket but I just assumed it was "TT02" noise. It was an easy fix, I just ground it smooth with the Dremel and buttoned it all back together. I am pleased to report problem solved and it runs smooth now. With the added Tamiya moly grease the drivetrain has never sounded so good.

Yeah (was) mine too. Supercheap used to have a large selection but when I went to get some for a Grasshopper there was hardly any there 😳 What was there was on clearance. They still mix and put it in a can for you but it’s from codes in chart book, so it’s not just pick the colour you like the look of on the shelf now, you need to know the colour code which is a bit of a pest.

I just hope Wholesale Paint Place still have their colour chart book with a sample colour of Valspa paint which is the next best option. Just more expensive unfortunately you’ll be looking at $100 a shell by the time you get plastic primer, a colour or 2 and clear coat.

I should have set myself up with an airbrush set up I guess. Hardly seems worth that now though as I doubt I’ll be doing many more hard shells 🤷🏻‍♂️

We spent two weeks in Southern France. No doubt the youngest and I smuggled two rc cars into the luggage... The weather was still great and we had good fun running the cars on the beach. That is until I over-cooked it and the Rough Rider got caught by a small wave. It immediately stopped dead in it's tracks. That led to a larger wave nearly completely sub-merging it. I rinsed it with fresh-water, partly dismantled and cleaned it. After two days of drying time, the car performed as before. Apart from one of the front bearings no damage at all! Phew... :-)

Did a few more laps of the RBP course after fitting softer springs to the TT-02 Skyline - noticably improved performance from the car (and me!)

Fitted the slicks to my TT-02 and gave it a quick spin (literally), it seems they need wearing in a bit!

Haha — a 2CV would be nice, of course. The center of gravity could be a bit high, though. Actually, I was thinking of a genuine buggy, but I also really like your idea with the mini Blitzer Beetle.

GF01TR body could work, 210 mm wheelbase.
