The random events on this thread are quite entertaining LOL

Finally did something RC related today! It's been at least a month since I trimmed this body. Laid paint down. Lots of stunning details on this Scooby.

Truck, is that a 5D with a 70-200 lens?

As above, shooting your own catalogue pic. Great work. Why is the camera hooked up directly to the laptop? What software do you use to edit/manipulate your photos?

Cheers

Yep, replicating the catalogue pic. Although not the one shown in the 1990 catalogue on the floor, I'd just done that so had repositioned the trucks to do the next one.

It's a 5D MkIII with the 70-200 2.8L IS II. A bit excessive for taking photos of RC cars but I mainly do 1:1 automotive stuff: https://www.flickr.com/photos/adrianfrst/

The camera is linked to the laptop for tethered shooting, that way I can see the shot immediately on the laptop screen rather than the small camera LCD. I can also fire the shutter direct from the laptop. I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Strictly, this was yesterday, but I haven't done much else all weekend and it's sort of car related, albeit not RC...

Went with my dad to help check over and negotiate a deal on this -

Nice, November/December is a great time to buy a sports car. ;)

I have the exact same camera setup with extended grip like yours and lens but mine is the 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM (not version II), never done any digital editing though other than resizing photos! I didn't realise you could tether it to a laptop. I did buy CS5 maybe? elements (IIRC) student version of the Adobe suite including Photoshop but just can't get the hang of it. Never tried lightroom.

I too use to shoot 1:1 quite a lot at trackdays (not professionally), for this I tend to use a an EF100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS lens for its versatility but nothing takes images as good as the 70-200 which is my personal favourite, cracking lens that is.

That flash looks really compact on yours, mine is the bulky upright 580EXII flashgun.

Nice!

Not editing / processing your photos is like slapping stickers on a bare styrene body. It'll look ok but do a bit of work and it's leagues better!

That's just the remote trigger for the flashes. The 600EX-RT units are slightly larger than a 580EXII. You can't see in the setup shot but for the photos I was holding a flash in a soft box in various positions to light from different angles.

Here's the result. To start a reminder of what I was trying to copy. Here's a scan of the original 1990 Tamiya shot:

That's awesome!! The only way it could be even better is if you had a hamster hanging out and/or eating snacks in every shot, but otherwise exactly identical.

Oh my God. That looks excellent.

I'm just sitting here putting silly big wheels on my M06. No interest since putting it up for sale so figured I'll have some fun with it. Lots of camber, drift tyres and some work needed on the steering angle and let's see if it will drift!

Mailed my Big Brute to its new owner, a short term Fostering more than ownership... fund in the account for Hmmmmm a few more funds to join.

Thinking I'll sell a few that are gathering dust and run the rest. Woohoo

Awesome work Truck Norris. Looks like you had to add a lot of noise to your picture to get it to match the original. Just incredible job there.

Posted

Thanks Quandry, yes noise, halftoning, blurring, sharpening and dust and scratches texture :)

I also altered the colour of the wood floor as my floor is much darker and not as brown as the original

Last night I upgraded the standard friction dampers on my GF-01 Toyota Land Cruiser 40 to Tamiya CVA mini shocks. Did not have time to test it properly though. Hope to thrash it a bit tonight.

Discovered my vintage Hornet spare gearbox is toast.

(Bangs heads) had to buy more parts today. This stupid restoration with re-re parts is going to blow up my wallet. Should have bought a regular ole Hornet NIB and called it a day.

Heck, it's not even vintage anymore...smh

Too busy with 1:1 car stuff for RC today. Selling my old Cadillac tonight (I discovered I like the idea of it better than actually driving it), and immediately dumping some of the proceeds into my Miata, which has decided to wear out its driveshaft U-joints... this on top of the muffler and assorted other bits and pieces I already needed to buy for it. And BTW, Miata driveshafts aren't rebuildable; you have to replace the whole unit. Grr.

I had a Grasshopper/Hornet/Lunchbox-related idea that I want to try when I get time, however...

Bought a couple more cars for winter :)

A boxed madcap that looks pretty good.
