End of year tidy-up in the garage.  The 10 built kits are all hanging up out of the way.

I have been away for a week with limited internet, that in itself is worth posting about, no internet is awesome, for a bit.

My son got his Monster Beetle and a Futaba 3PV for christmas so I built that. True to form for my last few kits I was hungover, but I started at 5pm. My bro inlaw is a farmer so first beer opened at 8am and that was a quart bottle. The Monster Beetle has been a huge hit, everyone loved it. The Futaba 3PV is brilliant, so much better using EPA than a crawler motor to slow it down so others can have a go and you can turn it up.

How long do NiMH last? Mine seem to have dropped from 40min to 20min but they are a year old and haven't been looked after. I want some more anyway as I only have 2 so that limits the cars I can run (the lipos only fit the racecars) but was going to buy smaller so they fit the rere buggies better.

Yep hang em up, nail em up, string em up... just don't draw and quarter them too. I have a wall with the excess bodyshells hanging on. Wall of shame, but what's that blue Calsonic GTR sitting on?

Not today but last night. Realised I’d ballsed up on the differential gear and used the wrong screws to attach the ‘lid’.

Should have used 2.6x10mm used 3x10mm instead. Didn’t realise until it came to fitting the RX switch housing and the 2.6’s were too thin to bite, balls.

Pulled it all apart and swapped and the 2.6’s appear to be holding the lid fast but the doubts there now. I know .4 mm is next to nothing in reality but still 😕

Need to decide whether to risk it or as someone else suggested source some 3x10’s for the differential lid too.

Any thoughts?

Could also try and source a new diff gear and use the screws you have.

Yeah, I’ve looked at that.

£6 for the housing or £3 for 3x10’s or hope it’s ok! Unfortunately I’m only able to get things online as no shops left around here. Silly mistake to make.

Just put 3mm back in if they will hold now. I am sure half the diffs built have the larger screws in by accident

Still leaves me needing to buy more 3x10’s for the rx switch housing unfortunately but thinking that’s the likely course of action now tbh.

Did some manufacturing yesterday evening and now its time to mount the dustprotectors. Never saw them in the shops for sale so maybe I can hook up my job now and go in mass-production.

I forgot, for those who are used to them, do you mount them dry or do you put some oil on it? I was thinking about foam airfilters, which are covered with filteroil to catch the dust.

Over the past few months, I've been adding to my wish list at Otley Modelsport, once I'd compiled everything I needed I was placing an order (nothing worse than ordering parts, then needing to pay extra postage!). Went to place the order last night, but got side tracked, so placed an order today, and guess what? The parts I need are now out of stock today!?!?! 😠

Typical!

By any chance, were they Tamiya brand parts that were out of stock?

That's nice, I recently saw a Calsonic GTR on a TB03 chassis so didn't know it also appeared on the TL01 aswell.

Question for you... would you risk driving that box art shell or buy a different shell for running?

Fitted electrics to two of my purchases bought as rollers..... I've had this particular TL01 for over 6 months now and all I did was the paint the bodyshell about 4 months ago.

Both are running the the extremely reliable and great value GoolRC/Austar 2.4g radios,  as for the money they have everything I need on them, I always use 1 handset per car which is my OCD I guess ;p

The TL01 is running a 3900kv motor and 3s capable esc, the DT02 is stuck with a more modest 3100kv motor and 3s capable esc.

After hearing everyone say how easy the TL01 to work on is I thought I would quickly put in these GPM Aluminium servo mounts  I had..... then I realised looking at the manual the servo is the first thing mounted so it all locks in around it after that..... so I had to disassemble the whole chassis to replace it giving me an idea of how it all fits together ;p

I'm going for a red theme on this chassis.

It's a relief to have these both running now and fully working, atleast indoors anyway, I'm still amazed how easy they are to set up once you know the electronics you are installing, that they all talk to eachother in the first place is crucial, then it allows you to move onto more fun stuff like making them run faster/better once outdoors.

I mostly use Tonys for tamiya parts, it was parts for the kyosho RB5 (UM508C, the part I've chopped up for the ultima build!)

finished paint on second Bush Devil 2 to my sons colour choices, have to say wish I had thought of doing the bed before pealing the whole cover off. Mine would have been black. His in silver with the roll over sports bars in Silver looks good....

You will probably have those left over at the end as there are always some spares. To be sure just buy another kit to get the screws...

The same thing happened to me before christmas so I still don't have my TRF418 sway bar set for the TA07. I didn't think that many people would want them but they sold about 3 overnight

Sorted it. Bought an aluminium servo mount and it also had a load of 3x10mm in there. Unexpected bonus.

It's exactly as given to me for free by a generous mate. I've driven it to make sure it runs but that's all so far. Lovely though.

how come you used them rear fenders instead of the full coverage ones.

I have never been fond of the full fenders. Kind of remind me of a table cloth draped over a table. Also impractical as you have to remove them if using motorised legs (which there is a workaround, as i have done it to my MAN).

Also I am still deciding if I am going to add a third axle at a later date (i.e, when I have the money to buy the parts).

Right now i am having filler trouble. I bought some Milliput, used it for the first time last night, and didn't like the consistency. It felt like trying to push a two week old dog egg into styrene. So i grabbed the Tamiya Putty White out of my paint drawer and the stuff shrinks like a bad thing, I have put four layers on to fill in the sunroof and it just keeps sinking 😧

Have you tried putting the milliput into hot water? Might soften it enough to work with better. Keeping it wet helps for a smoother finish as well

Finished building a Tronxy X1 3D printer so I can continue some of my stalled RC projects - the Heavy Dump Truck, Unimog 406, and Nissan GTR LM Nismo.

I didn't anticipate it would be such a nightmare to build.  China Inc. shorted me several spacers and fasteners in the hardware parts bag, several parts were incorrectly machined or formed and needed modifications, and there were basic design issues that needed correction along the way.  Some examples:

  • A few screw holes in the main base plate were not countersunk; the heads of some screws would stick out the bottom.
  • The holes in some of the corner brackets were too large, and screw heads would pass right through the holes.
  • The print bed wobbled on the main Y-axis rail; one of the roller bearing mounting holes was drilled incorrectly and needed to be slotted.
  • The idler bearings on the far ends of the X-axis and Y-axis rails were offset incorrectly; the belts would have shred themselves on the aluminum rails.
  • The print bed holes were countersunk on the wrong side.
  • The extruder mounting bracket wasn't bent exactly 90 degrees; the Z-axis lead screw wouldn't line up with the motor and coupler at the bottom of the Z-axis rail.
  • The Z-axis carriage was loose on the rail; one of the roller bearing holes needed to be slotted.
  • One of the Z-axis carriage screws was too short; no one compensated for the thicker stack of parts in one location of the carriage.

I thought it would be a 3-5 hour build, but ultimately it took about 20 hours spread over 3 days to finish assembly, double check axis alignment, and level the print bed.

The story does have a happy ending in that I was able to take an existing 3D design and run it through the printer successfully on the first try.  The finished part was dimensionally correct and had the same or better surface finish as the part I made a year ago on another printer.  The printer also has half the footprint and runs more quietly than my previous printer (which I gave away last spring).

Bottom line, if you're looking for a plug 'n' play printer, do not buy a Tronxy X1.  If you're looking for an easy and satisfying build, do not buy a Tronxy X1.  I only bought one because I wanted something with a smaller footprint without giving up build volume, online reviews suggested it was quiet and made decent prints, and the price seemed great at $118 USD.  Still, it got its pound of flesh from me before it was all done...
