There seems to be something about the XB Swift shells. Four of us ordered them, three came fully intact and one had a very small crack. However after just one run with very few collisions,  all were in serious need of repair with multiple cracks and missing chunks, and none had their mirrors any more. I haven't come across this level of brittleness with any other polycarbonate shell.

That doesn’t sound encouraging lol

The chassis is brilliant though, and it is easy enough to source a different shell. The Fiat 500 for example seems very tough. My mate has one that he had been racing regularly for years and although a bit scuffed,  it remains crack free.

Today I addressed the battery issue in my Sakura D3 drift chassis; the full story behind this model can be found here:  https://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=129715&id=37537

The issue is the battery compartment molded into the chassis forces the battery to be installed at an angle, yet the upper deck on the chassis limits the angle.  Even a shorty pack can't be installed.  The answer was to cut off the sides, install some foam at the back of the compartment to hold the battery more firmly, and reroute the O-rings so they capture not just the top of the battery, but also the sides.  I hated taking a Dremel and a file to the chassis, but there didn't seem to be a better way to make it work.

You can shamfer the underside edges of the upper deck, it helps, but i only did that to stop it slicing the stickers off my batteries, my packs (gens ace 5000 65c) just slid in there snug, almost didnt need the rubber bands!

Much more tinkering than running these days. Sorted the rear suspension on the thunder dragon, stripped down the gearbox and popped some 300000 cst in the diff, popped my spare Yeah Racing unis in the rear to match the front. When i get the chance i am loving running the thunder dragon on grass, but still trying to sort the setup. Turn in still very agressive and rear a bit loose, especially off throttle. Had a play on the CAD and ordered some toe in and adjustable rear uprights and some revised versions of my front c hubs to lengthen and lower the angle of the front arms to try and soften the steering response.

No postie or deliveries for 2 days now. Waiting for a shapeways delivery with some more 3 deg uprights for the dt03 and some try out bearing steering arms for the thunder dragon. Can you tell i am at a bit of a loose end away from work at the moment?!!

Got the Subaru WRX masked last night so I can get into painting this weekend.  Not a quick and simple task.  I'm not totally happy with all the lines around some of the fiddly bits, but there's so many decals I suspect it won't matter much.  I really wish they'd included light buckets with this body as there's so much detail everywhere else.  I suspect I'll buy at least one more of these to attempt something worthy of being a shelf-only model.

I've also thrown together a Lancer Evo X.  The plans for this are still evolving (terrible joke, I know) but I want to try something I haven't done before.

Spent half an hour reading Grastens Lancia build while I should have been working, went to the post office (sort of in between jobs) to collect 2nd of 3 small packets, this one being some diff grease. Just the alloy wheel covers to come. Now just having another quick flick though at work before Home time . Still at least I’m payed by the hour so it’s all money in the bank for the next kit :)

I haven't posted in a little while.  I'm in the final stretch of my dissertation so that's eating up a lot of my time.  Also, the boys at the track convinced me to join the 4WD SCT class which means a new build.  As you all know, Tamiya doesn't offer a SCT, 4WD or otherwise.  So after much deliberation and research, I landed on the Tekno SCT 410.3

I can't seem to find the "other brands" forum so I'll post the link to my build YouTube playlist.  I'm not done with it yet.  It'll probably take me another few weeks.

I had an amazing day racing 1:8 gocarts at the local club of which I am now a proud member. One of the members was kind enough to lend me one for the day. Not so easy to steer, just a touch too much acceleration and the rear end kicks out. I ended up third after the preliminary heats, damage to the steering after a crash saw me out of the finals though.

My son had a go in the practice breaks and soon had the hang of it, we had fun watching the M-chassis and Mini-4WD races and had a sausage and chips for lunch - what more can you ask for?

Started taping more than 2 months ago but weather has been so bad (cold and wet) here that today, I can only say I am a bit over half way there for the box art paint job for the TT-02 #58639. I'm not a seasoned vet by any means but this is one complex paint job! I'm not too happy w/ the outcome so far, many things I could do better in the future. After this, I have to re-tap the outside of the shell to put the matte coat on and then attach the lights, wing, etc....but ran out of masking tape! Maybe I'll get it done in less than 2 months. :o

A bit disappointed about the 2 lines crossing the hood and the rear that I've heard a few people complaining about....I'll get over it though.

Took the Peugeot 406 tt01e for a quick blast and my daughter took her ecx truggy out with me....... classic school boy error. Switched mine on all seemed fine.. until it went up a small kerb and went down (flew) an embankment into grass and mud. Only a couple cracks on front valance on body and a bit muddy so could have been worse. I then realised we had the same crystals in our transmitters!!! Bad times ... although once I turned hers off and gave it a good spin I thought this one is a keeper. The daughter then took the ecx out in the remaining snow and it was awesome to watch. Snow and slush flying everywhere... I got two ecx truggy things and they are actually very good for price .under £60 each rtr

We took the new Lunchbox out for a spin and my 10 year old daughter broke the steering servo when she clattered into the kerb.

So it’s on the bench for injury time already.

As building a snowman is sooo last year, (more that we had no carrots, and with the apocalypse, none in the supermarket either!?!?) we (my 3yr old) decided to build a penguin house, an Igloo to the rest of us.

So what do you do,with an igloo, a load of snow, a 3s lipo and a tamiya bullhead??

Try and jump it of course!! 😂

This afternoon I masked off and painted up a new basher shell for my recently resurrected and now slightly modified (ESC, sport-tuned motor, MIP ball diff etc.) vintage Monster Beetle. When it first arrived from Kamtec I was slightly disappointed at the lack of detail so decided to go for a simple but bright colour scheme to distract from it.

It’s Tamiya Bright Red over gold and silver which gives a subtle metallic fleck, and I messed about with a bit of masking for the stripes and the bonnet detail. All said and done I’m quite pleased with the outcome. The inside is very bling!

I’m going to add a few stickers shortly which will appeal to my 5 year old son, who was the reason for digging it out of the loft and fixing it up.
