Hey everyone.

I found out last weekend while driving my bruiser, that it is possible to shift gears while the truck is in motion. I didn't think it could but i guess it can! :P

Anyway, i was just wondering whether a good shift is safe for the gearbox. Obviously a bad one that crunches the gears isn't, but is careful shifting ok?

The Bruiser indeed is capable shifting gears when driving. Problem is the wear you will get on the brass rings with the gears on the inside that shift from on gear to the other. In this shifting motion the rings are forced on the moving gears. The springs on the shift arms inside the gearbox are used to moderate this force. Sometimes when you shift while driving you can hear the gears crunch. It's just like when you don't shift your 1:1 car in reverse properly.

In the old days the recommended radio gear was a 4 channel transmitter using the shift gate. In the promo movie for the Bruiser it shows "You can shift gears while running." It's indeed obvious it is not very good for the gears in a long term. When you only drive your 3-speed once in a while the wear isn't that bad.

In the modern 3-speeds (and trucks) Tamiya uses clutches to let the gears shift properly while running.

PS-Using a good lubricant in the gearbox also helps bringing down noises, wear and will increase better shifting while running.
