These are called design patents - they protect the novel ORNAMENTAL aspects of the product. Most of Tamiya's filings are for design patents. In contrast, Tamiya only has a relatively small number of utility patents - these protect the novel FUNCTIONAL or useful aspects of a product, i.e. how the thing works. See the patents for a shock absorber, steering unit, and a transmission. Utility patents are much more expensive and more difficult to obtain than design patents, but in return provide more robust protection.
