Friday evening my wife and I built our re-Lunchboxes. She had driven my Grasshopper and thought it would be fun if we had two of the same car to bash around, so I thought the 'Box with its big tires and easy-to-build chassis would be ideal.

The build went well; we went from NIB to wheelies on the carpet in about five hours. One gearbox had a little mold flashing inside it, which made the counter gear make a funny noise until I trimmed it. Otherwise, it went without a hitch. She did 95% of hers herself; I had to help with a couple little things, namely mounting tires to wheels and explaining the wiring setup. We built them stock except for bearings, Kimbrough servo-savers, and down-travel limiters on the front suspension. Other tweaks will come later, maybe, but the main point of these is to bash, so they'll mostly stay stock until something breaks and requires attention.

She wasn't crazy about the Dodge van body, but I had a very old Midnight Pumpkin body sitting around in a box of RC stuff, so I dug it out and got the parts tree with the mounts for it. The paint job is terrible, but it will probably get covered in stickers anyway. On mine, I left the 'Box body unpainted, but applied the stickers so it didn't look like a big bar of soap. This will be my basher body. I have big plans for the spare 'Box body (hint: Winnebago).

We ran them around the living room for a few minutes, scaring the cats, and planned to give them a proper first run Saturday, but got rained out (how often can you say that in Southern California?). So they're still nice and clean, but we'll fix that this weekend.

Photos coming when I get time...

Sunday we finally took the 'Boxes out for a bash. Wow, are these things fun! And we pounded on them for three packs each, and didn't break a thing. Gotta love Tamiya quality!

My wife doesn't quite have the hang of it yet, and her truck spent a lot of time on its lid, but she was grinning and giggling the whole time...

Now we need oil shocks, and the 3rd shock mod, and more motor, and... it begins...

And so begins the loss of any extra money you had laying around . Definately a plus that your wife is playing too , though you may need a second job after a while :)
