I've stripped one recently using isopropyl alcohol (IPA). This was very successful although I can't give any guarantees. Another very effective paint remover is the chemical xylene (used for cleaning airbrushes) although with both, test on some offcuts of lexan beforehand to see if any breakdown or milking of the lexan occurs (especially with the xylene) and please, please, please look at the health warnings before using either of these. Obviously the best reagent for most paints is the original thinner, I doubt very much if a two-pack paint would have been used to just paint a shell, so I doubt whether you would be up against one of those.

I've just finished stripping an Avante shell using nitro fuel. Worked beautifully! It doesn't work on all types of paint though, and on mine it worked quite slowly. If you have enough fuel you could soak the body in it. If not, you could do what I did and brush some on and leave it for a day or two, and come back to scrape the softened paint off and apply more fuel for the next part. The fuel evaporates very quickly so if you can keep the body in some sort of container it will last longer. It also leaves the oil on the body which needs to washed off with detergent.

I inherited a lexan bodied 4X4 and stripped the old paint off by soaking the body in denatured alcohol,it worked just fine,I used a 5 gallon bucket with a sealable lid with 1 gallon of denatured alcohol, for a couple days,so the alcohol does not evaporate, then hosed the body down and the old paint just washed away,I ended up buying a new body for it.

I still haven't found a reliable way to remove the newer 'fuel proof' PS sprays! The older PC paints fall off with nitro fuel, but it won't budge the PS stuff. Desperate for someone to figure out a method that works similarly on PS paint... Have a couple of good shells with bad paint that need rescuing.

Anyone tried Delta Activator on PS paint? Does soaking PS paint longer in 20% or 30% nitro work?

i have a brand new mk1 subaru sti shell that need repainting i got a few blemishes. im thinking of removing the paint 1200 grit wet 'n' dry, but there would be a load of scratches left on the lexan.

im would the scratches be visible when painted?

i wanted to make this the best shell i have ever cut and painted

edited to say i have tested on a scrap bit of lexan and some left over black cant see the scratches after the 1200grit on the 800 you can see the marks dont know what it would be like with lighter paint ...well it looks like i'll be sanding for the next 10 months!!!
