I am planning on getting a TTC trans for my Astute. My question is two fold. one why didn't Tamiya keep the ball diff in the trans when they added the slipper? And two is it going to be detrimental to the performance of the car if I put the ball diff in the TTC?

Because unless you built it properly and maintained it with the correct lubricants the diffs were a bad design and known for slipping and wearing out rapidly. As most buyers of the Super astute weren't serious racers Tamiya went for the easy option of fitting the much more reliable gear diff. The gear diff at the time was also seen by Tamiya as an improvement as their philosophy was to produce components that just assembled together, rather than have the owner have to learn how to adjust the diff settings themselves. This is why their ball diff at the time was assembled with a certain number of shims in it. The redesigned ball diff (that the user had to set up) in the Dynastorm finally solved the problem.

And two is it going to be detrimental to the performance of the car if I put the ball diff in the TTC?
Not at all, although if you keep the standard Astute ball diff you'll have to guess which one is slipping :)

Hi,

with TTC your performances will increase a lot. Don't mind about the ball diff on the rear, I noticed no problems on the track. I switched from Astute tranny to Super Astute tranny with slippery and gear diff but no slipping problems or traction problems. Anyway you cannot mount the Astute ball diff into the TTC. Gears teeth are totally different. You can try with Dyna Storm ball diff, same teeth dimension but what about their number? And what about diff dimension? If you can do it you are a genius, but believe me, it's so near to impossible that is impossible.

TTC works good in my opinon.

Cheers

Sorry, I have to correct the previous poster, because he is wrong. A ball diff can be used with the TTC slipper on the Astute, but not many people know about it.

I helped a friend to do this in the early nineties, and you end up with quite a nice diff/gearbox combo.

I found out that the front one/way gear fron a manta ray/top force fits just perfectly on the super astute main shaft, after some work on it. It has exactly the same hexagonal mounting shape.

You just have to carefully remove some of the material from the front of the oneway gear on the side where the flange is (about 5-6 mm), but when that is done, you can use super astute parts for everything, except of course the ball diff (astute), layshaft gear (our custom cut oneway gear) and idler gear (astute). It's the best of both worlds really, the super astute gears are extremely weak when gravel and stuff enters the gear case, and the astute ball diff is a good combo with the super astute slipper.

There ya go, a nice Astute mod. Try it out!

Hi mate! thanks for posting this "impossible" answer, i was happy back in the days when you build the tranny for me, it could be abused over and over...

i have done a thread about this modification and could be seen here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?...t=0#entry239481

And the word Impossible is not in my dictionary...GENIUS! SIMPLY GENIUS!
