Did RC Car action ever do a review of the car? Does anyone have an issue they could scan and send my way. I remember waiting and waiting for a review and I never saw one. All I remember seeing is the one advertisement that Tamiya had out running in a few Magazines back then.

I'm just about positive they did - but a review for kit #58116 must be in one of the issues from 1992 that I'm missing as that would be the timeframe. (see my other post looking to purchase the issues I'm missing to complete a full collection of RCCA). I also don't have a review of its sister car the Dyan Blaster #58123 so that must be in one of the issues from 1993 I'm missing. These cars were unique because of the special transmission.

HOWEVER....

There was the very limited Re-Release of the Dyna Storm 5 years ago - kit #49190:

One change from the original kit is a the re-release inclusion of a pink endbell Tamiya 17T Racing Motor (The original 58116 kit came without any motor but the pink end bell Acto Power Op.122 was recommended back then which is why you see so many of the original versions still with a pink motor). There's some differences on the re-release with steering linkages and clutch bearings but I can't remember exactly what they are right now. That should be about it - among all the wave of re-releases this one and the XR311 are the closest to the originals.

Quicktime Movie of the re-release:

And Radio Control Car Action reviewed this limited edition re-release kit in the March 2002 edition - Pgs. 110-114.

The re-re motor is 14x2 as is the original Acto-Power 2WD. The main differences between the motors is the original was rebuildable, had ball bearings, and adjustable timing, while the re-re didn't feature any of this. The re-re motor does have surface-mount capacitors like most modern motors which is nice.

The re-re Dyna Storm also came with full ball-bearings which the original did not. Interesting info on the steering linkage though. I'll have to look more deeply into it. The manual shown on this site for the 58116 Dyna Storm is actually the re-re manual, so I'm still looking for an on-line copy of the original to find all the slight differences... :D

George Gonzalez authored the article for RCCA and obtained and published his information on the motor wind based on direction from Tamiya.

There was never a retraction printed. Perhaps the gentlemen from TamiyaAmerica who posts on here can tell us whether or not Radio Control Car Action's article is correct.

Everything I've ever read said 14T. Must have received a Typo or something. TamiyaUSA doesn't really know that much about the items they get from Japan. Try calling them and asking a question about their CPR unit that they personally recommended for every RC car from 1988 up to 200X. They don't know the first thing about them... :)

Here's some interesting links I've found over the years though:

GTodd - Yes I have March 2002 and I'll get the article copied for you.

94eg! - You seem to be missing the point but your intentions are good. RCCA authors especially are known for their research - I speak with them occasionally and they stand out from the competition. In fact some of their best have learned so much that they've gone on to write for and edit competing magazines. My point is Mr.Gonzalez did not call up TamiyaUSA and ask for info like we have to do. They get a media press kit along with the car kit and direct contact info to the people running the company so they can ask questions and author their articles with educated information. The motor itself and the winds is specially called out in its own sidebar! So Again, I'm sure eventually the gentleman from Tamiya America who posts on here will read this and clarify once and for all. For now I have to stay with Gonzalez as everything he's wrote over the years and his evaluations have matched my own opinions and findings. I further recall reading a 2nd article from a different magazine on the re-release that went into even more detail on the pink end bell motor included but I have not yet found it. Regardless, it would not be fair to compare the re-re motor with the "original" as 58116 came without a motor so the "original" is whatever the modeler chose to purchase and install.
