With the exception of the 3600mah battery (I think) all Tamiya batteries are always NICAD. Does anyone know why?

Every other company moved to NiMH a long time ago.

I really like and prefer Tamiya batteries :P but, unless race battery regs are fixed to Tamiya, they are not competitive to race with.

I have no idea but just to point out that NiCd's are very well suited to high-draw applications like power tools and RC. The power tool industry is currently going across to Lithium Ion, my guess is RC won't be far behind as half the weight (if there aren't such already that is).

One particular advantage of NiCd is much better temperature stability than NiMH.

I personally like NiCD, so long as you take care of them they will usually take good care of you. Right now you can get cheap well made NiCD packs for far less than cheap not so well made NiMH packs.

NiCds are still the best way to go if (like me) you don't take particularly good care of your batteries, aren't concerned with eeking out every last milliamp, and don't like spending money on "invisible" stuff. I buy NiCd batteries for the same reason I use cheap basic servos; they do the job 80% as well for half the price.

I've always heard you have to pay closer attention to NiMH than NiCd, and I don't want to. I want to plug in my no-button peak charger, wait until the light stops flashing, and go drive my car until it won't move anymore, and repeat. So for me, 1700-1900mah NiCd is where it's at.

Thanks 94, I have seen the 3600 one before but not the others.

:unsure:B):o

Wish I could buy the 3700 here. They are excellent cells. I use them, but they are not 'Tamiya' branded packs.

If batts were not so heavy I would look for them by post.

So, it is safe to say that Tamiya have gone over to NiMah now? :o

Cheers! :P

Yeah. Even with their AA (UM3) batteries as well. They cite environmental reasons, but we all know it's for the greater capacity.

Nickel Metal Hydride Battery - TT-Gear Item #55092

Due to the negative impact that Cadmium has on the environment, Nickel Metal Hydride battery packs are now a common replacement for Nickel Cadmium ones. This new TamTech-Gear battery has an ample capacity of 1100mAh for long-lasting driving and provides high performance and reliability at a competitive price.

I was told a few months back that NiCad were being phased out for inviromental reasons, and soon you would only be able to buy imports from countries with laxer rules/ regs (Ie outside the EU)

Dunno how accurate that is...
