I'm trying to figure out which colour (red or white) is considered more collectable??

I guess this question can be tackled from two different views - Which is older, and which is most rare?

Thanks in advance for helping me figure this one out..

I believe the red kits are the later versions, but i've got no idea whats the most desirable :)

If your going to paint it anyway then it really doesnt matter. For a box art look runner the red shell would be best as you can polish it and leave it unpainted (i've done that with one of mine)

The red shell is the most difficult to find nowadays. And the most wanted.

Thought the White was the most wanted. Has it changed? Yellow? Post some pics...

Mine's the white shell, which I thought was the rarer one? Although my one wouldn't be that desirable anyway, not after I drilled 64 holes in it for my daft LED light show project

haaa there was a red body... interesting. I am currently working on a full-option (Thorp, CRP, AE shocks) MB which I purchased used many years ago... and under the scratched yellow paint it shows red marks, I thought this was its original paint, but I was amazed to see it wouldn't scratch. It's all clear now... sounds like once cleaned up it might not need any paint after all

Paul, have a look at the VW shell comparison article on Tamiya101.com, they use a red MB shell for the photos.

Quote from this site..

"All Sand Scorcher shells were moulded in white and the earlier Monster Beetle shells

were also in white, later Monster Beetle shells were in red and consequently

white Monster Beetle shells can command higher prices."

So is this considered the bible? White shells are more collectable?

Not at all, I have seen several posts here on TC referring to the white shells as the rarer variant, in my own experience there does seem to be fewer white ones but I could be wrong, maybe we should have a poll ?

My MB shell is white, I also have a spare nose for it which is also white

Hmm, this is a tough one. Does anyone know for sure which color was released first? Perhaps the red plastic was only released in certain markets?

Both colors have their pros and cons:

  • Red Plastic - Box art color makes the body even more unique to the MB kit. Easier to 'complete' for those that are not-so-good with a spray can. Not-so-easy to paint the driver though!
  • White Plastic - 'Feels' more like a Scorcher shell, thus enhancing nostalgic value. Driver is easier to paint. Also eliminates the need for heavy primer if you want to paint the body lighter colors... but how many collectors do this anyhow?

Poll needs an 'equal' or 'undecided' option! :P

The white shell is the rarest of the MB shells. Both kit and spare body parts were released with white shells in the first year or so. The red body was the later body for the kit and spare body set. It was easier to finish. I have seen a dozen MB's now and all of them had a red shell. I have bought a NIB body part set a few weeks ago which was white.

The MB on TamiyaRC which is for sale on ebay also has the red body.

I have three MB's at home... two new builts not painted, white bodies... on runner, red body (and that's news to me).

The MB I bought as a kit when I was a kid a few months after the release also had a white body... which my dad painted red, of course :P

will go have a peek at 101 - thanks for the heads-up!
