Why Did Tamiya Ditch The Cockpit Set?

Recommended Posts

Wow your Universal Cockpit looks pretty amazing! I really love the fact that it is Universal and one can also choose the distance between the driver and the dash. So it should fit even the tiny M-chassis cars!

Are you planning to make the helmets too?

Glad you like ! Only issue with the 'M' series may be the width, but, there is some trimming room, so they can be made a little narrower.

I hope to do helmets, too, but, they may have to be cast resin as they may not form properly on the vacformer - time will tell. I want to get the bodies finished now, as, if the helmets dont work out, there are plenty of them available on eBay !

Some advise i got form Sato-san at Chevron was to paint the wooden molds with polycarbonate paint. He did this with his first two molds, the Lancia bodies that he makes are wooden molds painted.

You could try that to remove the wood grain lines.

Fastford -

Do you have any good pics of a mk2 standard Escort ? I only have the RS2000. Having printed out the plans I have for this, it is gonna look a bit odd on standard touring car size wheels ! So I was thinking to do the rally version with the large forest arches - that should distract from the oversize wheels a little. I had also thought about doing it to fit standard touring chassis fitted with "M" series wheels as they are smaller and will look better. Don't know how a standard touring chassis will run with "M" series wheels though- never tried !

Any thoughts anyone ?

You have to make the mark 2 escort fit the M04L chassis, surely?

I would go out at buy an M04L tomorrow if you had a good mark2 shell for it.

The 6R4 is very short for a 4wd car. Would be perfect to fit this:

How I wish I could make my r/c cars sound like that - There is nothing on the planet that sounds as good as a rwd Escort running twin webbers at full chat ! :D:D:P

Have seen your mods to the TL chassis - looks sweet under the mini ! Maybe a little short for the Metro though - don't forget that the metro was longer and wider than the mini ! The idea behind making the bodies to fit the TT-01 was purely a selfish one - I have a shelf full of TT-01s ! The bodies will fit most, if not all, touring and rally size chassis's though, as they will be 200mm wide with a wheelbase of 255-260mm,so shouldn't be a problem for most.

I would like to know if I would get away with 'M' series wheels and tyres on a standard touring chassis, though, as the modern larger touring wheels just wouldn't look right, due to the Metro only having 13" rims !

I have the same issue with my Audi Quattro S1, and the Escorts would look all wrong with 19" rims too ! :);)

Thanks Ivan - I may give that a try - I am hoping, though, to take a resin casting from the first good vacform to come off the finished moulds, as the moulds I am currently working on are Balsa and wont last very long. Resin will be much more durable and more easily repairable too.

That shortened TL01 isn't mine.

Most Mark 2's run on 13" wheels too. As long as the arches are right you could use any sized wheels.

Right then,

I want test builders for the first batch of cockpit moulds off the machine !

I have them here at home NOW - so the first three people to email me their name and address to

THIS EMAIL ADDRESS ONLY PLEASE !

Will get ONE set of cockpit vacforms - FREE OF CHARGE - in return for feedback on their build experience. Please note, this will only be the vac formed parts - you will need to supply your own helmets, steering wheels, and other items you may want to finish it and install it ( should you wish to ! )

So -

Yeah, can't help thinking that the standard ones would just look too big. Won't find out till the shells are made and fitted to a car I s'pose !

Certainly, my Audi don't look right with touring wheels though. I got a set of M series wheels - just need to get some rally tyres and try them I suppose.

I'll take one and do a build up for you, but i'm not at my computer so i can't email you.

The shortened TL-01 linked to earlier in this thread is mine btw.

A 6R4 with the M03 wheel base would be fantastic as well.

Cheers

Ben.

The wheelbase of the 6R4 is 2391mm so in 1:10 scale would be 239mm so would suit the TA-03RS almost perfectly.

Only my mould has been scaled to fit a 255-260mm wheelbase ! That makes it around the 200mm wide mark so standard touring chassis will need offset wheels ;) bear in mond that most of the 1/10th scale shells are "off-scale" somewhere to make them fit the existing chassis's on the market.

Thank you so much for sending me the cockpit!!! I'm very excited and I will start immediately upon recieving the cockpit... oh man~ oh man~ oh man~

VS

I can't believe someone could get so exited about a couple of bits of plastic - hang on - isn't that why we all members of this forum ! ;):P:D:P

Well, thats it - all three test cockpits have been allocated to their builders - sorry if you wanted one, but, as of now - 00:12am I have only received two emails and one PM through TC - so - sorry if you sent an email and not had it arrive - there may be another test session, depending on the results of this one.

I am building one myself, so I will post up pics of mine when it is done - so, Testers - would you do the same please ? that way everyone can see who's doing what and how the individual build is tackling their cockpit. I have not given any instructions to any of the builders - they are gonna have to figure it out for themselves - this is deliberate as I do not want to lead people into doing it they way I see it, but, I would like to see how different people do it incase they have a better way than me !

So, Good Luck Builders - have fun !

The standard Metro Mk.1 had 12" wheels.

The 6R4 had 16" wheels I believe, I read it somewhere (can't remember where), placed further out than normal on "extensions". This is my favourite 6R4 picture ;-

I'm putting more scans here in a while from the book of the 6R4 so you can see the engine etc.

Sorry about the size of this one but it's necessary for anyone who wants to reproduce any of the cockpit!
