Here it is, the most early '90s thing you'll see all week:

20240712_162727.thumb.jpg.999d6c074c203df41e705461cc449e0a.jpg

First-generation Traxxas Hawk, found on eBay for an irresistible price. Should clean up nicely.

Also took a chance on a big lot of basic servos for $40:

17 total, 14 good, 3 duds. Not surprisingly, the name-brand ones all work fine; the three off-brand/no-name ones are no good. Still worth it.

From RCJ, more bling bits for thr WR-02G. Usually gets GPM parts from AT but they do not have blue in stock for this part.

From JAZRider, carbon chassis for the (soon to be no longer) budget TA-02(Ra) and steering upgrade to the 'paper clips steering.

Effectively, RCJ and JR are the same company with the same address. But ordering deom JR dedicated website gave me a 10% discount, not sure why is that.

Got this today... it was sitting on ebay auctions, with no interest for quite some time, and I keyed my auction at the last second, and got it right away...

A Graupner Super Speed Race Car, or Kyosho Mach Sports, with a BMW M1 bodyshell, in a very nice state. Probably from 1982, the chassis being from a bit earlier -1979 or 1980...

Got some 10x15x4mm flanged bearings from that well known UK RC bearing shop.

Kinda disappointed to be honest.

I know they don't claim any fancy abec ratings for their standard stuff, but I usually find their bearings are nice and smooth and spin freely.

These ones feel pretty sticky and like they have a fair bit of resistance in them, unfortunately.

This was for that Nikko project I have ongoing. These kind of bearings with rubber seals are not common, so I was really pleased when I noticed RCB had them in stock, but they are no better than the ones I got from China, which I have subsequently cleaned the grease out of and put oil in, so unless I do the same with these, I'm better off with what I have already.

The search continues....the only other ones I can find are genuine Arrma ones but they are a bit pricey and I don't know how they perform.

These ones are really cool - I've been thinking about getting one. Remember the ads in the local hobby magazine for the BMW CSL. But why would it need 4 channels, really?

You must remember that those 4 channels were really to say :  Right, Left, Front and Rear. At that time, this wasn't a given in RC cars...

Got some rare parts for my M02 straight from Japan. These are the missing parts to reactivate my runner after 20 years. Don't know what to do with the moss green parts. Maybe a shelf queen.

Also some TL01 parts, but I didn't know what's to do with them. Seems I have to buy a TL01 or FF02 B)

Last day of the holydays now and I ran an RC for the first time in 3 weeks. Just setting up a random course on the street,  since the road is not wide enough to fit the current Postal racing-track. Since I have a few sets of half worn, but not good tyres,  I thought I would try to utilize what I have. I tried it on the M-08.

First out was the set of 60D kit tyres front and S grips rear. The rears went off on the outer rim within the first lap. They are so worn,  so there makes no sence to glue them.

Second out were the Ride frontie premounts I run on the XV-01. I had good results with them on the M-08 last year. Now there is no grip and large scale spinorama. I also crashed into the curb a few times.

I then Just cut through and mounted the Ride 60D 36 and 30 slicks and things got back to normal. It was a joy to run it, get the speed up and feel you are into the zone again.

Took a while to unpack today's delivery. I made use of Aliexpress's Euro promotion and bought quite a few things. More to arrive in the coming days.  This delivery include ESC and motor fans, ESC battery connectors, a 9.5T motor and, not from AE but Ebay, parts needed for the carbon conversion of my TA-02(Ra).

This Td-4 Super Avante, for the price of €169 it was a steal from D edition and the hopups parts where not that expensive at Asiatees, so very happy with it.

4x brushless ESCs

2 of them are the new Surpass "M series" in 60a flavour. I didn't see these till after I had ordered 45A WLtoys ESCs for my Nikko project. I was looking for something compact and cheap that wouldn't blow up, and those were a known quantity.

If I had seen these first, I might have gone for them, I have no idea if these will work any better than the 45A ones, but Surpass stuff is usually pretty decent and well presented for cheapo stuff, so I decided to give them a try anyway.

They are really compact for their size, the polar opposite of the other Surpass 60a ESC with the red heatsink. I've tested one in isolation quickly in a buggy and it worked very nicely, but it remains to be seen if they would perform any better than the ESCs currently in the Nikko.

They worked out about £11 each.

But of course, just after ordering those, I noticed the BYRC store on Aliexpress had a new product. They sell a lot of "RTR" versions of Hobbywing ESCs, the ones that RC manufactures buy in bulk to put in their RTR models. They usually work just the same but the programming options a bit simplified.

Anyways, they had a new G2 version of the waterproof 10BL60.

I found it a bit odd, because Hobbywing themsleves don't make a G2 version, but the store has always been reliable for me, so I chanced it, especially as they worked out at about £20 each using an Aliexpress coupon.

Then the day before they turned up, this popped up on youtube:

Get in!

Only question now is, which ones do I try in the Nikko? Or do I try both? All good research, right?

The Quicruns are probably a bit overkill but I know they will probably have one of the smoothest startup sequences of any ESC this side of a sensored or FOC/sinewave crawler system, and it's not like once I put them in there, they can never be taken out and used elsewhere....hmmmm

Of course you are gonna have to try them both in the name of science ^_^

As a Dictator 87-owner I am following your thread with interrest. I don't think I am going that drastic with it, though. I've had it since new,  so too much sentimental value to hack up.

Interested in the results here, are any of these sensored?

These are all sensorless.

The cheapest sensored ones I've used that are decent are the Hobbyking x-car 120a, a sort of hobbwing 120a clone, but they seem to have been out of stock for a long time now, sadly.

HOBBYKING X-CAR 120A 120 AMP BRUSHLESS ESC SENSORED SENSORLESS 1/10 CAR TRUCK RC

I've tried the "Tsky" blue 120a ones from Aliexpress that also looks just like the older hobbywing 120a ones. They work fine on 2s, even with really fast motors, but seem to instantly die on 3s. Seem to have a design flaw, cause I've used other cheap brushless ESCs on 3s, even 45a and 60a ones, but the blue ones will burn up even sat on the bench, so seems an electronic issue rather than an "oomph" issue. I want to be able to use 3s on the Nikko, so although they work well enough as a 2s sensored esc, they are no good for this project.

There's a Surpass "rocket" 120a esc on ali for about the same price as the Hobbyking 120, but I haven't tried it.

Rocket-RC 120A Sensored Brushless ESC 1~3S for 1/10 RC Car Truck Short Course

Also a "Fire phoenix" branded clone of the hobbywing 120a, but likewise, I haven't tried it.

Fire Phoenix RC 120A Sensored Brushless ESC & LED Program Card Combo Set for 1/10 1/12 Buggy Touring Car

And there's a black 80a hobbywing lookalike, but again, haven't tried it lol

There are some problems with RM around here recently causing many of my deliveries to be late.

https://orcadian.co.uk/royal-mail-deliveries-impacted-by-recent-resourcing-issues/

Today is one such example where multiple late parcels arrived all at once.

Sj6vtxY.jpg

From Asiatees, piggy back shocks and a WR-02 brace along with, of course, my usual free wheel hexes.

From Aliexpress, many receivers, a new controller that I want to try out on the tank and another controller for the Steam Deck.

I had been tempted by this bundle quite a few times but it works out to be the same cost for a TS50 + Surpass Supersonic or Rocket V3 and I have good experience with the TS50. They are good as long as not using super fast motors and staying with 2S.

got some parts today, most of them for the same project. MST 5.8 king pin ball connectors, ReveD aluminium steering set for YD-2, Yokomo shock oil, A-arms, front bumper mount, hinge pins, 3mm suspension arm balls, steel top shaft, front suspension arms, steering hubs and short king pins.
