I had the exact same email yesterday, really threw me because I'm doing a lot of trades at the mo but I didn't recognise the name. I checked out the SMTP headers and the mail came from a freeserve address, and was sent to an address at my domain that I don't use for paypal. The fact that the domain begins paypal.com is about to confuse people tho (it confused me for a bit!)

I forwarded the mail to Paypal and they have confirmed it is a spoof. My guess is they will steal your paypal username and password.

I own my own domain name, so everytime I sign up for a forum or website or buy anything on-line, I always use a new name@mydomain.com - that way if I get spam or virii or spoof emails, I know exactly which company sold my address. Plus it makes it easier to get rid of spams.

is sad, the individual is smart enough to extract infromation from other people's computer for his own gain. Why don't this same individual apply his knowledge or smarts legitimately and earn his money by proper means. I guess he never thought that he may go to prison and when comes shower time or lights out, some hairy BIG DUDE will whisper in his ear that they'll do the first thing that comes up.

Losers- It really makes me angry, and my fingers want to spell out naughty words....

I've been done a few times through eBay and PayPal. Once when an eBay account had been highjacked, so they had decent feedback on the account and looked legitimate, and once by someone that took my money and closed the account down. On both occasions PayPal refused to be interested and eBay said it was not their responsibility either.

I HATE people that take money from others in an unfair manner. God help those two people if I ever happen to meet them in a dark alley, and I'm normally Mr Nice Guy!

'Account hi-jacked'

smells like male cow poo to me.

I've heard it before but i don't buy it, i mean, if it did happen then how would the 'hi-jacker' get your money, cos surely you'd send it to the registered account or registered paypal account?

According to eBay, the eBay password was somehow discovered by a 3rd party and a different PayPal account was linked to the account, purely for the purpose of taking the cash from a bunch of unsuspecting bidders. By the time PayPal had any idea about what was going on, the money had been withdrawn from the account and into a bank account some place.

As far as PayPal are concerned, they will not refund payments under 15 and will only refund up to 105. Pretty lame if you ask me. I no longer buy from eBay, though I continue to sell there.

Would this show up as a 'pending' action in your paypal account if it was a real transaction? I would assume if it was not shown there ,then it is not a real transaction.I've had a few Ebay and Paypal scam emails , but you can usually spot them a mile off .If in doubt just send them to the spoof controllers at Ebay and Paypal.

Yes it would show up on your paypal account as 'Pending'

So my advice is:

Don't follow Suspect links

and

Check your Paypal account for any 'Action', Pending or otherwise.

just to add to this i just got another "spoof" paypal email, i must be loucky as aol mail picks them up straight away, but i though i would make you guys aware.

Hope none of you have been done by this too.

At the end of the day the only sure fire way to access paypal and be fully secure in the knowledge you got to the correct place is to type in the web address yourself. And if you do get emails saying your account is locked or anything suchlike. then close the email open your browser and type the address in. What ever issues you got if "legitamite" with be apparent on your paypal account.

The spoof goes some thing like this.

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your PayPal account from a foreign IP address.

If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you. However if you are the rightful holder of the account, click on the link below to log into the account and follow the instructions.

If you choose not to complete the request, you give us no choice but to suspend your account temporary.

It takes at least 72 hours for the investigation in this case and we strongly recommend you to verify your account at that time.

If you received this notice and you are not the authorized account holder, please be aware that it is in violation of PayPal policy to represent oneself as an other PayPal user.Such action may also be in violation of local, national, and/or international law. I'm so gullible for this sort of thing, (no ideas you lot!) so thanks for the heads up. It's confusing that the link starts with www.paypal.com...
