I was just browsing the TamiyaUSA hop-ups for the DB-01, and came across something new. It's the TRF Buggy Damper set for off-road cars. just wondering if anybody has any info or pics of this up & coming hop-up?

I can't imagine Tamiya manufacturing new IMPROVED dampers.

That said, I bet they are a packaged version of the 501X's aeration dampers with a black ring adjuster instead of blue for the springs..

Yeah, but at twice the MSRP (501X shocks retail for $57)? :D They will probably include the precision shaft guides and pistons or something. It also sounds like the shock body will have that new black low friction coating in addition to the titian coated shafts...

I remember you pricing out the 501X's. Because these are a TRF package, the MSRP will be costly. I think on the street at around 60-70 US $ because the Touring TRF special blue/black coated dampers go for 50-60 US $ and the DF03 go for around 50.

No more Speculation from me.

Yeah.... That sounds right on the money...

Can't wait to see pics of 'em, and put them on my "things I want, but will probably never buy" list... :D

Does anyone know the length from eye to eye for these dampers? Or the stroke length? And what is the thickness of the damper with the spring mounted, at the widest point. Cheers. This set, 54028, does not come with spare springs does it?

I will try to get a pic for you in a couple of hours B) I am ashamed.. They have been on the buggy for about a month now and I have only had a chance to run it once. I am still amazed at how much better than stock these are since they seem so similar in design.

Tamiya #54028 TRF Buggy Dampers Set - DB01, DF03, DT02

I run the TRF aerated dampers on my DB01 they have titanium coated rods and teflon coated bore with a screw ring adjuster an excellent hop up for the Durga. I run mine with Team Associated spring set. running 2 holes in the pistons with 40 weight oil in the front and 30 in the rear. you can jump 6ft or more with great landings.

I got mine for about £45ish (inc postage) from RC Sasuage Dog

Deffo worth the buy.

later

P.S

these are not new they have been around for ages and are the ones supplied with the DB01 R and similar to the 501x

Sorry for the pic lighting.. I took a couple in the garage and a couple inside. Don't mind the tires that are on there... I am purely wearing them out (3Racing). LOL. Vince has his pretty dialed in, I haven't even had time yet. I know a stiffer spring up front might help not having to dial them down so far. Vince is pretty spot on in saying you can drop it from about waist level and it won't bottom out. It will still track straight on gravel roads and absorb small bumps really well too.

Anyway, enjoy!

I'd like to know this too. And does anyone know if they use the same size collars and caps as the touring car variation?

While they are not the exact same collar as the touring car dampers (because of the imperial sized springs), touring car collars can indeed be used. I saw them installed on Oople before. I believe they even allow a slightly lower ride height without the problem of the spring slipping off the seat (like the stock ones)...

ooo anyone know if they would they fit the Stadium Blitzer?

Jay, they will fit fine mate. They'll go on a variety of buggies including the DF03 and I've been using DF03 shocks on my Blitzer from day one.

It's an expensive set though, a 3Racing alloy set would be the cheapest option for upgrading the Blitzer.

That's quite true today Vince but look at the date of the original post.

I realize this is an old thread but I am trying to find out the length of these shocks too to see if it will fit my old Tamiya buggy. So does anyone know what the length of these shocks are from each mounting hole?

Just a quick measurement(I didn't take them off my car):

Fully extended: Fronts 75mm, Rears 90mm.

Fully compressed: Fronts: 59mm, Rears 66mm.

They can of course be shortened with internal spacers, but if you do so on the rear, you might want some shorter springs (I found that Team Durango springs are a bit shorter, approx 3-5mm I recall?) as the springs are exactly long enough for the damper when fully extended - so shortening it will also compress the spring. This is not the case in the front where the spring is shorter than the damper fully extended.

Thanks for taking the time to measure them. I tried searching for a long time on google and could not find the measurements anywhere. Looks like these should work for me so I'll try looking for Team Druango springs if I have to shorten the rear shocks.

If your not using them on a DB01, then you won't know what springs will work until you install them. The standard springs are a little to stiff for their length on a DB01. If whatever vehicle your using is heavier at the rear, then the standard springs may work fine.

In terms of rigidity, that is :D I wouldn't want to tweak the length too much though, it will seriously limit the range of springs you can get for them - if you need different springs anyway like 94eg! mentioned ;)

You can even cut your own springs to the length you need. Just keep in mind the more wire you cut off, the stiffer the spring rate gets. And be sure to trim them the same left to right.
