OH MY GOD... I feel like you're my long lost brother!

It's like when you have a car/buggy/whatever with dececnt suspention travel i feel the need to drop it onto the floor from about a foot up in the air!

When I put oil shocks on my first Grasshopper I spent a couple hours picking it up and dropping it... I made every member of my family come watch it land on the workbench. "It used to bounce, and NOW look!" I said. None of them were quite as excited about it as I was.

i seem to find chattering diff out cups are the bane of my life...i spend far too long ensuring that the suspenion droop is perfect even if it costs some of the travel, just to ensure that the car/buggy runs as quiet as poss when lifted in hand and run at speed.my orv chassis chattered even with the new frog universals.

i must have built the gearbox like 20 times sorting out e clips on the diff outs....then fitting washers one by one to the inside of trial friction dampers till i got the correct mix of travel and quiteness???!!!!( incidently if you have an orv style chassis try shortening the dampers at the rear with a plastic spacer inside the shock..maybe about 3-4mm.makes the chassis sit level and the diff wont mutate itself when you corner and the inside wheel spins wildly )

i reckon the down stops on the rear arms let it droop too much, then its chatters and kicks in the cups..nothing worse than a kick in the cups.

I really get a kick out of taking the kit boxes out of the cupboard and just sitting there playing with/ looking at each of the parts, dont build it, just look at it :) Also when I do build a kit I like to make sure every screw is in perfect and if possible screw heads are lined up (prob something from my days in the Military). Like to make my kits look as close to box art as possible and if I can add a few little touches for realism, like putting the A-Type ABC Diffuser on my group C cars. Have been trying to source a CPR 100 unit so the car looks like the one no the box side, a normal speed controller just wont cut it.

I remember when I first got my Toyota Toms, after every run I would strip it down (wheels off. bearings out etc) and clean every part so it was ready to go again. Soak the bearings till they ran clean again, no grinding etc. Clean the speed controller, everything had to be spot on. I love this addiction.

WOW. Word for word, you described my RC habits... I clean and polish my cars after every run, then can't wait to get it dirty again and go thru the cycle all over. My real car hasn't been clean in months. Before I got into this hobby, I cleaned my 1/1 car at least once a week and check all the fluids religiously. I think Im gonna give my baby a carwash this weekend...

My obsession only goes as far as keeping all my R/Cs in tip-top condition at all times. If something is messed up with one of the cars, it just sits in the back of my mind and eats away at it until I fix it. Only problem is that once I fix it, I feel a little empty inside. I like having r/c projects that need to be done, and searching for deals on parts.

On the contrary, it no longer seems to work the same way with my 1:1 scale cars. Since getting this heavy into R/C, I'm now dreading doing the 1:1 maintenance that I used to love so much...

I have to admit,

My obsession is the planning, builiding and customizing. But this is not everything.

When selecting a new project, I sometimes observe my reasoning is taking strange ways: I start thinking about if the final product of e.g. a limited kit or customized part or special version will create some positive comments or admiration within this community.

I freely admit, admiration from TC members makes me feel good on top of the car itself. It would not give me half of the fun and satisfaction, if I could not show and share my pretty little diamonds to people who can judge value and perfection of handmade and customized models.

My 2 conspicuous behaviour patterns would be ;-

1) Wearing a Tamiya baseball cap (the blue one) each and every time I ever go out (in the slight hope that a fellow enthusiast will spot it and we can talk about RC models :) and to make the public more aware of the brand logo :)

2) Having longer than normal finger nails  so that I can manipulate the RC parts or sand down Sand Scorcher windows to get the scratches out without my nails wearing down to the bone...

Best,

Alistair G.

On shelf queens, I believe in all-Tamiya parts, no substitutes except maybe battery pack: ie: Tamiya Esc, Tamiya brand bearings, and eccentrically, only the hopups recommended in the instruction manual.

I am the same way, except I do use Tamiya battery packs... LOL! They don't have to be period correct, just color coordinated. I'm currently keeping an eye out for a new EX pack for my clear-bodied Avante though...

Tamiya ESC, battery, servo, parts, hop-ups & all hardware =

you have to admit if the parts are uniform to the manufacturer, it certainly boosts the presentation and garners that extra "ooh" or "aah"

My obsession with RC stuff, particularly Tamiya?

Staring at the Tamiya Product cataloges for too long...when I should be reading my many books I recieved as past Christmas gifts (that I promised I would actually read).

I sometimes like to put the little tamiya logo on the car somewhere that comes from the bottom corner of the decal sheet. Usually in black text.

Yep, thats livin' on the edge for ya! Quite an obsession!!! Send him to the nut house!!!

Great replies all. (Saito, were we twins separated at birth? I did the tree thing too, and I feel your pain over the Jeep mate - hope you finally own a WW now?)

Ah, batteries. I like the look of old Tamiya batteries far more than any other. I bought up my LHS's remaining stock of Tamiya 2400SPs a few months ago. Nice, boxed, Tamiya batteries with the old labelling. :( Also ran my Super Champ on the weekend with a vintage hump pack. I only run with Tamiya batteries (I don't really care about massive runtime, LiPo, yada yada yada - I just like the idea of sticking with my favourite brand).

Another thing I do is try to keep a little stock of Tamiya rubber bags. Overpriced party balloons or not, I love the logo on the vintage ones. My restored Hotshot (which was only supposed to be a runner, but came up well and hasn't seen dirt in the 6 years since I finished it) always has one over the motor, as per manual. And if/when I discover that the rubber is perishing, I replace it. :D

cheers,

H.

I am extremely obsessive about what type of grease I use in each area during a build and worry constantly when running the cars as to whether I used too much or too little grease in the gearboxes...

I have to keep my manuals pristine also - I have various ingenious ways of holding open a manual without flattening or creasing it during a build....

Also - steering trim has to be perfect. I cannot ever be happy until a car goes completely straight - not even a millimetre to the left or right over a long distance!!

Do people call you Ali G? :D

 LMAO!! I was wondering how long it would take people to notice that :)

Suprisingly I have never been called that...

It is however my actual name (I am Alistair Gutcher), my surname is Norweigan (My ancestors are from North Norway, I am a 'real viking' LOL).

Everyone "Up North" i.e. from the north of England, where I live, says my name "Alis" "TER" or "Alis" "T' " (I like that).

But I have a friend called Jon who is from "Darn Sarf" (Down South LOL) i.e. Southern England, he's from Kent, and he insists on calling me "Ali" "STAIR" (says in a posh accent) which really irritates me, it sounds like I have a staircase in my name...

I like the way my initials are ARG (which was a planet from the Adventure Game, wonderful 1980's Sci-Fi puzzle show from BBC).

Good Grief that was self indulgant hehehehehahahahah.. Time to get back to Vintage RC buggies B) !!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Alistair G.
