Hi

In the process of rebuilding and wanted to upgrade speed control. I believe the motor fitted from new is 21 turns (what ever that means)

Lost touch with all of this, Over 10 years since i last ran a car.

Also what is the best battery pack to buy. What sort of mah should i look for.

Thanks Rob

Hi rob,

The motor that came with these cars is the Technigold which is a 21 turn motor (number of times the wire is wrapped around the armature of the motor). Most ESCs are rated according to the number of turns they can handle. The lower the number - the higher the current (Never been able to figure out why these things are not just rated for current!).

There are any number of ESCs that will do the job, and I'm afraid I'm not the best one to recommend which you should get. Personally I prefer Futaba gear, and I would probably use a MC330CR in one of these. I have several cars running Technigolds, and I use the old MC112B controllers in those, but they are vintage cars running vintage gear.

Battery packs are up around the 4000mAh mark these days. If you are only looking to have a bash around then you will get good deals on the slightly lower rated ones - 3300 and 3600. I like the Intellect and the GP cells, but others may have different preferences, depending on whether they are racers or bashers.

Cheers,

Don.

Make sure you get a suitable charger for your batteries too. The old trickle chargers are useless for modern cells.

There is a huge range of speed controllers you could use, just make sure it is rated for less than 21 turns, for example a 15 turn limit. the Mtroniks RV15 would be a good choice as the 15 turn limit means it should handle the Technigold easily.

Batteries, as Don says look at 3300-3700mah capacity. For a little price increase over smaller capacity batteries you get loads of run time. Be aware that modern batteries (except the really cheap ones) are nickel metal hydride, not nicads, so you will need to buy a charger that is NiMh compatible to charge them without damaging them.

Ok thanks for the help. I have just purchased a ripmax ac/dc delta peak fast charger (model number o-ip2500) and a 3300 mah battery. Roughly how long will it take to fast charge this battery?

Thanks again Rob
