Yeah exactly its your collection so put what u want in it!

- Look perhaps at having a mix of off road and on road cars.

Maybe choose those that share common components in order to limit your spare parts bill.

What kind of cars do you enjoy driving?

regards

hi

like i said mainly bashing about at the local park,so mostly off road for actual runners.as for the shelfers anything really.but what i`m after is something moderatly easy to build/hop up etc that i can make a really good job of to get me started

Why not get yourself a re-re Hotshot. It ticks a lot of boxes as a great car to start your collection. Its a very good looking car, Its one of the best builds out there, there's plenty of hop up options available and ok its not the best of runners when compared to a modern buggy but its fun enough and obviously has that nostalgic vintage quality to it.

I was new to RC a couple of years back. Like others have said above you just have to collect things you like the look of. Were you into RC cars as a kid? Perhaps start trying to collect the cars you always wanted but could never afford back in the 80's (not that they're any cheaper now lol)

You could go for the rerelease Brat.Has a hard body for the shelf and a polycarbonate one for running.Suits both your needs. You can get a Frog later to keep the cost of spares down as theyre both the same chassis.

Not a lot in the way of hop ups,but the ones that are around are the only ones you`ll need anyway.Bearings, front CRP shock conversion,Universal drive shafts, adjustable motor mount. There are other parts like front and rear bumpers, ball diffs etc,but the ones i`ve listed are the main ones.

Just go for what takes your fancy mate. I find with shelf queens I get a bit bored and chuck them on ebay to buy other stuff, then start all over again! I'm now concentrating on Crawlers and scale 4X4's but I'm sure that will change in due course. Plus I have the problem ove only being allowed 10 models at a time by her indoors, but that's a whole different thread :)

Nearly- Just a reissue of the original. Usually with some 'improvements' (Like the Brat) but sometimes just a lookie likey (Ie the highlift Hilux)

I don't mean to be Mr. Know it all. If you have lots of money, space and time than collect what ever you fancy. But if you are limited to either M, S & T than I would recommend collecting a series that you like whether is buggies, sedans, trucks, tanks etc...that way you can really hop them up, fix them up and appreciate them. Of course you should have a few runners (one for off road and one for road) to have some fun and not worry about it, but always clean them up afterwards. I call it pride of ownership.

I would like to run all my RC even shelve queens but the cost of electronics, even servos adds up. Now I am refocusing my collections as space and time are my issues and I am by no means have lots of money.

Of course, you can always buy whatever you like, built it, run it and them sell it. The money you loose from selling, think of it as entertain expense like going to a movie.

I would add that it also depends on what level of 'bashing' you plan to do, a bit of rufty-tufty ragging around in the dirt could be handled by most off-road type models with little damage other than scratches, dirt etc. However, if you plan to fire cars at a ramp so they fall 20ft to the ground all afternoon they WILL break so it would be better to either buy something fairly modern so you can buy spares easily and cheaply (Gravel Hound, Rising Storm, Desert Gator etc)...

OR...

Buy something that sold in such huge volumes that spares will never be rare or expensive. Tamiya had a habit of warming-over models with say a new shell or wheels or whatever to turn it into something 'new' for instance the old Manta Ray was re-bodied to become the Blazing Star, Terra Conqueror (etc etc) so a car based on that chassis would make perfect ramp fodder.

Remember though that a large part of this hobby is discovering what you actually like doing with your cars and we all end up with stuff we don't like/want/use at some point so don't worry too much - RC cars, especially Tamiya ones, are as good as cash on eBay and in the TC traderooms - you shouldn't have any trouble trading it for something else, get your first one at a good price and you can't loose! Go for it!
