Is this speed controller that Tamiya are supplying in a lot of the kits now........anygood?.

What's the motor limit on it? Reading the review of the Touareg in the latest issue of 'Racer' it says it can handle a Sport-Tuned motor. Is this motor 23T?.

yes this motor is a 23 turn. i am looking at esc's myself and have been told not to really bother with them. have a search on here in forums and you shoud find sound advice about esc's

Errmm, simply wrong in my opinion. I can't live with MSC's... rubbish control. Haven't used an MSC for 15 years now. ESC's are one of the most useful inventions in history, wonderful things.

Just one word of warning - no BEC on the Tamiya TEU-101BK ESC...

And weak brakes on it on heavy trucks (fine in touring cars though).

NOT knocking this Tamiya ESC though.

I have one myself and I love it, it's a very good ESC, nice, quality, and controllable, easy to set up, glitch free. Mine works perfectly. 12 GBP from Stellamodels.

BEC stands for Battery Eliminator Circuitry, and this basicly powers the servos and receiver in the kit. In the early '80s kits had to have a seperate receiver pack (4AA batteries) in the car itself, to power the electrics. The BEC took over the power from the batteries, by taking the power directly from the NiCad car battery, reducing the cars weight. The BEC circuitry until recently has been built into the receiver, but on the latest Futaba receiver for example (re142) the circuit is no longer there, so the Speed control has to have BEC built in.

Glad this explanation is small[:P]

Exactly - otherwise if the ESC hasn't got BEC built in, then the non-BEC RX gets 7.2V or 8.4V from the drive motor battery and it kills your RX! Stunning! That's modern receivers and 'progress' for you [;)]

Also, something else to beware of - for later on - if you connect a 4.8V or 6V RX pack to your non-BEC RX, even when your ESC has BEC built in, and you forget to snip the middle (+5V) wire on channel 2 (ESC to RX connection) then you will either fry the RX like I did ([:I][:D]) or melt the ESC (like another TC member did [;)]) - but this is a rare circumstance and you only need to worry about this when adding a 1/4 scale servo for BIG torque (10Kg+ cm) in e.g. Clodbuster steering improvements, since the big servo needs more power (i.e. separate battery pack) since the BEC circuit sometimes can't supply the power required without steering 'glitch' problems.

So, in Summary, either get a BEC (generally AM) capable RX and just use a 7.2V or 8.4V racing pack and either BEC or non BEC capable ESC, and suffer reception problems indoors near large metal objects like your fridge / cooker (because AM has signal reflection problems under these circumstance indoors where the radio signal bounces off metal objects) and you get 'multi-path' problems,

or get an ESC with BEC built-in (preferably at 6V output) and a non-BEC RX (like the latest 40 MHz (75 MHz in USA) FM ones) and get interference free FM operation, since FM has no problems with signal reflections indoors that I have ever seen. That's why I stopped using AM and went to FM!

Should work absolutely fine. The BEC curcuit in the RX will bring the voltage down for supplying the RX and protect the RX.

BTW The ESC will get fairly hand hot in use with your Yokomo 27T Stock motor, but this is normal!

Someone somewhere must have done a "run till it melts" test on the teu101bk going up the power on motors? Tamiya state that it'll only work with the 540 or Sport tune motors, but we must all know that isn't true (how would it know???)! Anyone know?

I tried to run a TEU-101BK in my Gravel Hound with a Tamiya Super Stock RZ (23T) and the ESC wouldn't have it. The car glitched all over and sometimes locked out for a few seconds. Swapped it out for an LRP no limit and no probs since. Anything hotter than a 27T stocker and the TEU-101BK will give grief, unless you drive very gently.

I wonder if they're all exactly the same. I've a customer who's put a Super Stock RR in a Wild Willy 2 and it's running fine on the TEU101 but have also seen a few burnt ones (some just get wet but they actually burn if you put a 9x3 in with them - in an unballraced TT01 - with overtight wheel nuts - with no grease on the gears - I believe the car moved a few feet before the flames went up!).

I wrote the Touareg review and put that bit in about the ESC as my LHS have had mant failures from this unit from customers upgrading the motor. I think it is a cracking little thing for the money but I warned against using anything hotter than the Sport Tuned as I wouldnt want others blowing them up and blaming the esc. Even though the Sport Tuned is 23t it is not very quick and does not draw that many amps. A decent 27t BRCA stock motor will draw more amps and rev higher.

Chuffed to make the cover with it though [8D]

The reason is that WW2 is 2 wheel drive and has low traction, 4WDs have always much higher current needs due to their higher traction and transmission losses.

well i used to run a 21 in my gravel hound with that speedo and i never had any problems, in fact 3 of my friends are still running there hounds with 21 turns in with no problems!!!

Hi All,

I also run this ESC in Gravel Hound with Tamiya's Type T motor and without problem. But then I have converted my DF-02 to a touring car

and run 65/23 gear.

And also to my surpise, my brother's XB TT01, using CRP01 receiver/ESC

also handle the 23T Stock motor pretty well. We do run these cars

for up to 2 battery run, however.

im running a parma cyclone 2 14 triple in a very hoped up tt01 drift car with the tamiya teu-101bk and its held up so far.not to sure how far it would go but every runs a bonus.i think the speed control are made by futaba but not to sure.

my old tekin 410k finally cried enough last week , and the only option was to fit the teu 101k speed control from my WW2 , i ran 4 heats and a final at my local track in my losi xxx kinwald with a 13x3 in it + had the cars battery powering the receiver and the ko propo fet servo and the tamiya speed control that cost me $29 aud didnt miss a beat ,, well done tamiya!!!!!!!![:P][:P][:P][:P]

by the way adding a simple 1 watt resistor can lower the voltage you are pumping into your RX if you dont have a BEC

You should state also its resistance value (Ohms) as its power rating doesn't tell much.

This has really confused me...

I have an old Acoms reciever in my car, with an MSC and stock motor.

I want to put a Tamiya ESC TEU-101BK and an RS-540 sport tuned motor.

Please can you tell me if this is all compatible and plug and play - e.g. unplug the old ones, plug in the new ones, calibrate the ESC and "bob's your uncle"??

Thanks,

Sam

Indeed. Bin the MSC and old motor, plug in the new bits and you're away.

Also, as I bought it second hand (the car) I didn't build it.

At the same time, I am ordering an alu. propshaft and heat sink etc..

Please could you tell me if I need to "take apart" the whole kit to replace the motor and prop shaft.

Sam

P.S. DOUBLE POST!! D-OH!
