Will I get away with putting an Ansmann 18T motor (bargain5.50!!!) in this chassis with an ESC? Will the belt drive hold the extra power? Should I change the pinion gear as well, is it really necessary? If so which one do I get? Any help on the topic will be much appreciated. Thanks

I run a 13 turn in mine no problem. What size pinion are you running, and is the car ballraced?

Not sure about the pinion, it is just the stock pinion that came with the car. As for ball races, I am getting some when I get the engine and ESC. Do you have an ESC in the car, if so which one? I want a relatively cheap one 20-30 that has reverse. The Tamiya one only runs up to 23turn motors...

I run a Vega Factory(no limit),but its only forward and brake. For speed controls,LRP AI runner reverse and Nosram Hawk can handle 18 turns and up.Both are around 30 and are waterproof too.If you get the Hawk Power,it handles down to 15 turns for about 5 more.

I checked what pinion I use in my car, it's a 14tooth gear. I have ordered a 20/21t set but with a 15t motor. I think that will be way too much for the car to handle. Am i right? Do more teeth increase acceleration or top speed? Any ideas??

I run my ta03 FS with a 15 turn motor and a no limit mtroniks esc.

Its fully ball raced but the rest of the car is standard.

I've had totally no issues with it, it handles great at top speed and has plenty of torque to wheel spin if you are aggressive with the throttle. I've got the stock pinion installed, can't remember what size it is off hand though.

Its a tough chassis with strong, large size gears and the belt is very durable.

I am absolutely shocked!! I put ball races and a 15t motor in my subaru and I honestly can't believe how much faster it is. It's slightly ridiculous now I need to find a bigger space to play with it. I never knew these things could go so fast! I think I could probably race people now... I'm still shocked!

Haha,it`s great when the difference is so big eh!

The TA03R was the car in the 90`s that got me back into RC cars. That reminds me,i need to dig it out and put it in my showroom.

Well i have only just got back in to it and this is the first time i have souped up a car. I am waiting for a Tamiya dualhunter so thought in the meantime I will boost the power of my old cars and my god what a difference a few quid makes.

Right, I've had an awesome idea...

I want to change this on road rally car into a truggy...how difficult will it be? I think I will need new front and rear arms(no idea which ones will fit), dogbones, tyres...etc etc

Has anyone done this before and if so does anyone know what parts would be approximately interchangable with this chassis?

Any help would be a bonus.

With the gear ratios available for a TA03 it is not suitable for large wheels. 14T pinion is 8:51:1 FDR and a 25T pinion is 4.76:1 FDR. Big wheels and a standard motor needs more like 9.3:1 FDR.

Be sure to use a steel pinion and throw the kit aluminium ones in the bin where they belong. Search at modelsport.co.uk for .6 pinion and grab a RW Racing one. Using the aluminium pinion will quickly wear and also destroy the spur gear. Tamiya AV pinions are also very soft aluminium and not worth using.

The belts on a TA03 are very exposed and sticks and rocks will get caught in the belt/pulley's very easily if taken offroad (BTDT).

You shouldn't really have much problems with the belts especially if using the Aramid fiber ones with alloy pulleys. When I ran my TA03FS rallycar I didn't encounter any problems with rocks or dirt or even grass in the belts/pulleys. Small tree branches might be a problem though. Also there's no reason why you couldn't use a 12T pinion on a TA03. Believe it or not you don't really need much to turn a TA03 into an offroad vehicle. Anyway here's my TA03 with some buggy wheels/tires. Handled great in FWD and AWD modes.

Any Idea if I would need new front and rear arms to give it more width and to be able to fit bigger wheels/tyres onto it? Anyone know which are interchangeable with the Ta03?
