Those of you who have been following loaded' s thread concerning his nightmare experience will know that I completed a trade with him involving the 'S' parts from my 'almost' NIB Black 934.

Consequently , I am going to complete the build of this kit - probably the first of these to be built for many years.

I intend this to be a runner (or more accurately , to be capable of running ) , so my first decision must be which radio gear to fit.

I have a few NIB Acoms sets , but have never really thought about the age of them. Does anyone here know what year these sets were produced in?

It doesn't have to be 1977 I suppose , but older would be better. Any thoughts would be gratefully received. :P

These are the sets I have:

I also dug out an old glass display case I've had for years , and gave it a quick coat of paint (black , obviously :) )

Got to treat the finished product with the respect it deserves !! ;)

that's all for now!!

Mark, let me be the first to congratulate you on your decision to build this car!

All those radio sets are too new, from about 85 to about 90, definitely not the era you are looking for. I may have a suitable radio, PM me on what we can do with it.

I suggest using the bag and box (suitable strengthened within) to display the model, but it is up to you!

Keep a steady hand and inform us of progress!

All the best, Paul.

you are definetly insane. Good luck with the build. A more suitable radio is the old futaba that has the wheel

i have the acoms chrome techniplus witch i brought back in the very earlly 90's and i still use it know works great and stills looks in very good nic also.

i did have the black tecniplus one back in 1988 when i got my first rc that was the hornet.

and hey good luck on the build hope every thing goes to plan seeing on the value of it. i would be scared ******** to build something of that value. but hey what the heck.

oooh... hope the rejuventated display case didn't scratch the Jaegermeister whaletail :)

as for radio... you should search for the vintage Futaba square-box-with-wheel.

The 3ch version of that comes in BLACK cracklefinish... but i'd think rarer than the beige 2ch ones.

Period Futaba servos (square drive?) also made in Black.

ACOMS AP227

In my opinion you need the Acoms AP227 - best pic I have of it. Taken with my original XR311, This was pre 1980. If you want better pics let me know ..

Good luck with the build and keep us posted.. :-)

I couldn't agree more, the wheelers are too modern and not very English (at lease from that era!). Sorry guys, but this new build is going to be here in the UK :-) Seriously though, that was exactly the Acoms stick radio model number I meant, I just didn't have the model number to hand. I have a few of these and think they are absolutely appropriate for this model.

I would appreciate it if someone could confirm that the wheeler is actually period from 1976, as I personally don't think it is, but am willing to be proven wrong!

Kind regards, Paul.

OK - thanks for all the input guys :)

My preference has always been for stick radios, wheel sets have never really floated my boat!

So the hunt is now on for a NIB Acoms AP - 227 - if such a thing still exists.

Any leads gratefully recieved.

All the best

Mark

Hi,

I got an Acoms AP227- MKII from ebay quite cheaply a while ago. These where from around 1982, i know because thats what i got when i got my original Sand Scorcher.

Meant to be built. The satifaction for me is in the car, not a box of bits. I have lots of boxes, and drawers, and cupboards, and a loft- all full of bits...

Well done and good luck

It must be said, there is a satisfaction in owning a complete collection, or preserving something in its original state as it becomes older and rarer. Furthermore, there is also something to be said for recreating the experience of building a model from a new boxed kit, radio and all and getting it dirty for the first time, which is what we did as kids. That excitement as the battery charge draws closer and you know you are going to run that model!

We all understand that some people just don't get NIB collecting. Don't forget that NIB collectors don't insist you keep your models in their boxes!

Lets all enjoy all that we do and not single out differences.

Enjoy the hobby!

Paul.

Couldn't agree more Paul.

Although I personally get more pleasure from building , I also have several NIB kits - which in some respects I feel are being preserved for future generations.

Anyway , as Paul says , we all have our own preferences - and if we weren't Tamiya fanatics , we would't all be in here , when we should probably be doing something more productive !!! :)

So - back to the progress report.

As I have said previously , the chassis of this kit was already built , so the first step has been to dismantle , clean and reassemble.

The original builder had been a bit too enthusiastic with the threadlocker , so I had to remove this , and also replace a few of the brass nuts which were beyond saving. I also replaced the diff asembly with a NIP part , as the original had yellowed slightly , due to exposure.

The wheels are not the originals , they have gold centres , and gold painted tyre lettering - I still have to decide what finish the wheels will have.

I think a bright silver lip with a matt black painted center would look killer. What do you plan to do with the body? Jager, Valliant or paint it gloss black and make a road going car?

I know I will probably chicken out. I was considering building a 934 this year, it wouldn't be too hard to make mine look like a black one...

Kind regards, Paul.

Shodog

Errr - I think I will probably stick with the traditional Black!!!

As far as the wheels go , the Tamiya Guidebook shows the finished model with all black rims. I did this with my rebuilt Black car - and to be honest I think it looks terrible. (though having said that I haven't painted the tyre lettering , which does improve these cars tremendously)

I like the silver/black idea , I think I may end up trying a few different sets and see which looks best.

Excellent build thread!

Great to see you actually build this. I am not a fan of the NIB scene either. The satisfaction, for me, is greater when looking at the finished model and running it rather than looking at parts on a tree. I really like comparing the built model to the box and the drawings in the manual. Although, when the NIBs have company and are part of a large collection they do start to make sense, even to mee. :D

I wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing some action photos once you are done!

I had one until the battery compartment gave out - leaking NiCd ate away the contacts  Still have the receiver and servos. Watch the servos - they don't like taking hits very much...

Still looking for that elusive NIB Acoms 227 !! Any leads gratefully recieved.

Haven't made much more progress as yet, though I have found the correct NIB battery .

I have also just got this fantastic timewarp Black 934 - untouched since it's first owner trashed it in the 1970's

That's all for now - more progress soon , I hope.
