I had to change the bulb in my mini maglite last night and wondered about the possibility of using the bulbs for headlights in RC cars.

Anybody looked at this option before?

Maglite's are very bright for the size of the bulb and look a doddle to wire up (very similar to led's), but just wondering about voltage and such.

My mini maglite takes two AA batteries so if i wired two in series would the output from the rx be powerfull enough?

if you need any help with any sort of electronics mate, email this address.

chem-electronics@bristol.ac.uk

they will get back to u about a day and are excellent help. i am in the process of making my own led head/tail lights for my car and they helped with the resistors i will need and that. they wont let you down mate.

The problem though is any sort of heat build up.

Whilst they may be fine outside in the open or in a metal bodied torch stick them in the relatively confined space such as a RC headlight and you may find the heat builds up to an extent where some plastic might melt.

Stick with LEDs much friendly and brighter.

I'm not sure what sort of bulb a maglite uses, but in theory you could wire 2 in series from a BEC receiver output, this will give you about 5 volts. However, I would recommend fitting LEDs into reflectors from cheap little torches instead, as they are very low current and the brighter ones are pretty close to the brightness of a normal bulb. Or for super brightness, get hold of a couple of Luxeon Star LEDs, which are many times brighter than even the brightest normal LED.

Just having a browse on the web and there are quite a few maglites which use Luxeon Star LEDS for their lights.

Why not just buy some tamiya head light kits? Esay to wire-just plug in,and away you go. Normally sell around $5US on ebay and work quite well.

Heat now there's a good reason not to bother.

Will stick to the led route.

Thanks
