Need some help with selecting an oil for the gearbox. I see local HW store have 3 in 1 oil and chain oil spray. Would any of these work for lubricating the gearbox?

I thought we are not suppose to use lithium stuff in the old 3 speed box? I'm thinking maybe just the good old engine after run oil for nitro?

As far as I know, white lightning does not contain any lithium. There are several versions though including the "clean ride" which is waxy and "wet ride" which is a synthetic lube. So, if you've already but a petroleum based lube in your gearbox, I would stay with that. If your gearbox is clean or new then try a synthetic.

Neat oil leak picture, if any of my cars did that, my wife would have a fit! :o

Thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll try the castrol chain lube. (similar stuff to what you're using.)

I have drip pans for my trucks... top lids from WesternDigital 3.5" HDDs = perfect size!

Yeah they keep dripping for quite a few weeks, sometimes i think more oil comes OUT

than what went IN ...(shhh, don't tell anyone in these $100/barrel crude times)

I wouldn't use drylube, the gearboxes need 'wet' lubrication especially if you still have

the original bushings in them. I have tried Moly grease, works ok for the gears

but the shifter forks still need regreasing regularly - i don't like them looking dry.

3-in-1 used to be the usual bottle grabbed... but the smell is pretty strong.

Lately i've been trying 80w-90 gear oil, as used for Morris hypoid rear diff.

Its nicely thick, coats all the moving parts regularly and doesn't seep out so soon.

After every few runs i do squirt out the gearbox with motor spray - quite a bit

of metal filings & black dirt usually gets dredged out from the bottom of the case.

I use Slick 50 transmission oil and it leaks from the casing :P and I have put a dish under the tranny.

Mind you the 3 spd is a shelve queen, so why I put any fluid in the tranny is beyond me. B)

It's not leaking; it's just "marking its territory."

LOL been there done that..... even the opel did that when it was very new... i tried some oil in the diff to see how it would go...

then took it to show a friend at his sisters place...she had just got brand new WHITE cut pile carpet....yep, you guessed it.....

The recommend "Tamiya Spray Oil" is available at my LHS. But after reading the descriptions... lubricates, penetrates, prevents rust, etc...

Is it just a re-branded WD-40?

I seem to remember that my friend Wilf uses 200 wt oil (like treacle well almost LOL) in his Riley car's gearbox (1930's car). He has to order it specially. I'll bet that doesn't leak so easily. Works for his 1:1 car a treat as well...

Cheers,
