You are correct. There is no front one-way for the Avante...

The real questions should be: Why do the instructions say to never use the front & rear hop-up ball-diffs with the center ball-diffs? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the center ball-diff is not adjustable. You are just supposed to crank it down tight and leave it...

All I know is that the standard Avante drivetrain in my Vanquish was simply awesome on the local packed (near concrete) dirt track. Brand New Spire-Spike tires still look new after several runs, yet the car could corner on a dime and still clear the tripple (with a SuperStock-TZ & old Tekin Sport ESC). I wonder what it's like with more power...

I didn't realise it said that in the instructions.

I have the Avante 2001 with the ball diffs and the centre ball diff and it handles great. I did try it with the one way in but didn't like the way it handled. When it braked the front wheels don't brake with the one way and I seem to remember reverse being 2wd only. I haven't tried it with the locked centre diff but my original ball diff didn't work I guess it would be similar to that.

If your original ball-diff didn't work, rebuild it. I found the same problem on my used 2001, and rebuilding it freed it up. Just make sure the cone washers all face the right way, and don't over torque the center screw.

But if your center didn't spin, then yes the locked center would be exactly the same (but lighter)...

PS: Of course the center one-way removes front brakes (and reverse 4WD). That's the point. It helps rotate into corners, and pulls hard out. It's certainly not for everyone. If you had a front one-way, this effect would be even more exagerated...

Hi run my Egress with ball diff front and rear. I tryed locked center gear, one way center gear and ball diff center gear. My choose is for center ball diff for these reasons:

- Locked center: direct push on the wheels but harder to drive, the car become "stiff" in the bends, the wheels spin more and the rear diff is always under pressure, expecially with hot motors.

- One way center: always the same direct push under accelerations but the car become more unstable in the bends. It bends sharper but brakes as a 2wd and try to rotate during trigger release.

- Center ball diff: the car is smoother, during accelerations and during bends. Counter torque effect, tipical of this chassis, is less and the rear ball diff and axles are less stressed. There are more rotating masses that cut a little bit of acceleration but help at high speed. It's easier to drive, all the wheels copy the line of the bends. Remember all real 1:1 4WD cars have 3 diffs.

The best option in my opinion, mixing the Egress Ball Diffs with the Avante/Vanquish, Avante 2001 center ball diff.

I was thinking.... Brakes and reverse would be compromised (with a front one way, if such a beast exists).

The center diff will transfer drive to the end with the least resistance. When you reverse or brake, it'd send the drive out the front, where the one way would just freewheel....

who uses brakes to slow down?? WHY?!

Oneway works great with narrower front tyres.

Egress enters the corner at full tilt, steer in and slight touch of brake to loosen the rear to swing if needed,

the full power on again at the apex. Corners sharply & it will neatly drag itself out of the bend.

That's why I say it's not for everyone. It requires a different driving technique....

I rebuilt it many times but no joy. If you loosen off the screw it would eventually come loose and fall apart. I believe the small metal collar was to blame and a possibly manufacturing defect. Sometime later (15 years or so) I acquired a Vanquish and a couple of other gearboxes with the ball diffs. All these worked fine so I compared them and there was no difference in the build or positioning of spacers etc. You should be able to fully tighten the screw and it still work as it did with the ones I have and that way it won't work loose.

Yep I know thats the point of the the one way bearing but I hadn't realised that till I put in the car. I don't race my car use it more for general driving and if it gets stuck then 2wd reverse isn't too hot :D

I've been thinking about lubing the front & rear planetary diffs of my Vanuish with Anti-wear grease just to see the difference in performance. Unforntunately I no longer have a local off-road track to test & tune which kinda ruined all my Buggy fun. I really need to find a good place to run off-road...

I can say that it worked wonders for my Hotshot, and the difference was easily noticable on the street.
