Hi guys,

As you all know I am a total Newbie to this site (and loving it btw!) and thought it might be interesting to see how old you all were when you first got into modelling, what your first car was, how you got into it, and also your age now and when you got back into it (if you ever left of course?!).

I hope I don't sound intrusive and of course you don't have to say your age if you don't want to, but I thought it might be fun and to see if there is a pattern at all?

OK i'll start:-

I always liked radio controlled cars, and a mate of mine in Junior school had a Turbo Panther (remember those?..there was a 'turbo' button on the controller for extra speed!). Then my old man got a Turbo Beetle from Tandy, then my uncle bought a 'Chipmunk' (remember those?!) and it went on from there. Of course all of these were pre built in their box.

I was about 11 when I first walked into a serious modelling shop to see the real big boys toys! I ended up getting for Christmas a Mauri Ninja and spent a few hours every night with my dad building it leading up to Christmas. Man I was STOKED when I actually got to use it!!

From there I purchased the Tamiya Monster Beetle, and the a Kyosho RS2000 Nitro (always broke down!!). I was then about 16 and getting into college when I gave up the hobby / discovered drinking etc and forgot about modelling for a while. I actually ended up selling my Ninja (shock horror!) for spares to a mate when I was about 13 as the thing constantly broke down and fell apart (I don't care i'd still buy one now and put up with it as part of the fun - how odd is that?!), my Monster Beetle was slowly taken apart for spares for my RS200, then THROWN AWAY! (EEEEEKKKK!) and my RS2000 was sold with controller and servos etc when I moved house at the age of 24 when I came across it in my dads shed!

Since 24 up until now I have not given them a seconds thought other than seeing the occasional Nitro and thought it would be cool to get back into it 'at some point', but after seeing the Hornet in a local shop, the bug has seriously taken over once again and i'm as excited as I was when I was 10!

OK so in closing and to stop waffling, i'm 32, and live in Nottingham

Next please! :D

hi everyone,

First i would like to say welcome to the forum malakite :D:)

My 1st ever car was a Kyosho Alpha electric(soild cars really got a beating lol)My 1st ever Tamiya was a TL-01 which i later sold on and got a tt-01.Ive owned about 40 cars(9 of them in my collection-high lift being the best!) and ive been collecting since i was 16 and im now a whopping 17  been collecting for 1 year as you can guess and really love it!! I 1st got into r/c when i have a rubbish Argos ready to run car-I wanted to upgrade this to a newer one but my brother said its a waste of money go into real r/c which was then i found this great hobby. :)

Im in wolverhampton, west midlands-does anyone live by me??I have only seen one person who lives by me on a different forum who is into r/c :D

First of all, welcome to the forum :D

And about me... Well... I am 16 now and I come from the Netherlands. Unfortunately r/c isn't too interesting here I think, Only people yelling about big 1/5 stuff and big amounts of money going into the cash registers of the local hobby stores... :)

But despite that, I started collecting RC cars now since about a year... or let's say, tamiya's (haven't had a non-tamiya one yet). I got my first tamiya (a tl01) about 6 years ago. Before that I already looked in catalogs of companies that sold rc cars, dreaming of owning them... And when I saw one alone in a toy store, I couldn't resist getting it for the 150 euros it cost me (with radio gear, the Subaru Impreza WRC Mk.I, at that time my favorite car too). 2-3 Years later I bought a Wild Dagger, I sold it last year (shouldn't have done that though)... My uncle also bought a TL01 earlier... But he didn't do anything with it, so he gave it to me :o But it was quite worn, somehow the whole rear dif was worn (It was a QD, only driven about 10 times) :) So I turned it into a project.

Then I saw the M-chassis in the beginning of last year, I liked the M02 in particular. I bought one (M02M, Mazda Miata), restored it, and by cristmas I bought myself a new built Renault Alpine A110 (It drives way better than my Miata, so although I wanted to be a car than would only run once or twice a year, it's now a much used runner)

I also started a Sand Scorcher build from parts at about cristmas last year. Still far from finished, but that's ok, I'll take the time :D

I just bought a TA02 for a rally car project (I'll make the car in such a way that I can make on and offroad setups on it, so it will be competitive(-ish) on both surfaces, at least, that's my plan), and the summer holidays are coming (exam year, so the holidays start for me after the exams in end may or something). I got myself a job for the holidays, so I will have the money to buy an FF01 (To be more precise, I want a NIB or new built Renault Clio) and maybe more to come :)

Welcome to the forum again.

mine started off when I was 6 with a Tandy off Road Tiger - great Machine with loads of torque and no real top speed, was tough as old boots and took 4 x C class batteries allowing me to go on really long runs with the family walks.

Over time I had many other "cheap" and "semi cheap" cars from the likes of nikko and more from Tandy, still nothin proper so to speak.

then for my 14th Birthday I got my first car a tamiya TT01 Subaru Impreza WRC 2003. From then its just grown a grown and I still have that very car in my cupboard as a chassis, Current list of cars I have had (that I can remember now) and there present state is below.

2x TT01 - My original I still have and one I passed thourgh as a trade.

1x TL01 B baja king - Sold

2x TL01 - both sold

1x TA05 - sold as belts and bashing + stones dont mix.

2x TB02 - 1 sold then bourght another that now underpins my Touareg

1x CC-01 - Sold as didnt like the steering, not really race touareg material :L

3x TB01 - 2 sold and one kept which is my full option LA one.

1x DF03 - Dark Impact that underpins my Pajero T3

1x MO4L - that is underpinning my 2wd dakar buggy project.

1x custom truck chassis for a dakar support truck project.

Also here and part owned with dad is a Merc 1850L box lorry and a knight hauler with flat bed trailer. Further dad has a TB01, TT01 and CC01 based defender.

Now just turned 18 last month and not bad really for a college student collection, I also have a fair few Nib bodysets that are there for a rainy day.

Done Bodysets

- CLK GTR sportsware

- 99 Impreza WRC R.Burns (RIP)

- 2006 race touareg (used)

- Impreza 2001 Proto (used)

- Lancer VI (used)

- Impreza 2007 Irish Rally (lightly used with lights)

- HKS CLK (used)

New ones

- CLK GTR sportsware

- Lancer VI

- HKS CLK

- Bowler Wildcat

I also have some shells on ebay and a load of various Wrc decals.

Best Wishes

I am 24 years old, and got into the hobby last Christmas, so about 3 months.

My wife bought me a High Lift, then I bought another High Lift.

Then I bought a Bruiser. Then I bought an Avante MK2 DF-03 buggy.

Then I bought a Losi Mini Monster Baja.

Yeah, I went pretty crazy, but I am starting to slow down a bit now.

When I was a kid, I bought a ton of RC cars, but they were cheap and always broke. I had a Tyco Fast Traxx, which was awesome by the way. I had a bunch of Tycos and Niko's etc. I really wish I got into the hobby when I was a kid, because I loved RC's, but never had any that were very capable or durable.

I am a newcomer, but quickly got obsessed with the hobby, and it is a great hobby. Tamiya's are much better quality and have much better performance than any of those toy store RC's.

Plus, it is so much better now because there are big, long lasting battery packs that charge very fast. As far as I was aware, that didn't exist when i was a kid, and it kind of sucked because playing with your car for 15 minutes and having to wait 4 hours or more for the battery to charge, is no fun.

My first R/C was a Porsche 935LM, I can't remember what brand, but I think that it is still my dad's loft (have to remember to get it back). I got this as for about 3 years I was plaguing my parents for a Tamiya Holiday Buggy that I saw in my mum "catalogue". I will one day own a Holiday Buggy!!

About 5 years ago, I was in town (Norwich), looking in the local toy shop and saw the Tamiya Staduim Raider, asked the wife if I could have it as I thought that it would be fun to blast around the local car park. I started "hopping-it -up" after about a week to the spec that you see in my showroom. A few weeks later I bought a Tamiya Wild Dagger, hopped it up too, it was eventually sold.... as you do. In time I bought a Tamiya Nitro Blaster, a Traxxas Revo 2.5, a Tamiya Hummer, the Hummer and the Nitro Blaster, as always got hopped up, and eventually sold. Recently I have bought a TNS Nitro XBG Mercedes C Class DTM, a Lancia Delta TT01 for it's body shell etc.. The Revo was traded for a Clod crawler, which was eventually sold. Now I own a Tamiya F350 High Lift, and the Nitro Lancia Delta and a RE-Ferrari F40.

Whats next?? I don't know yet, only time will tell.

Hi, my name is Daniel, 33yrs old, Sydney Australia and I am a Tamiya-holic ....

Actually, I will take anything r/c related...

My first Tamiya R/C was an original Manta Ray purchased not long after I started my apprenticeship 16 years ago  ohh what a proud moment walking out that hobby store with a NIB I slaved for weeks to get, I think that is why the sweet chemically enhanced smell of the original Tamiya rubber tyres is so burned into my memory, it's like crack I tell you!

My current list:

Tamiya

F350 Hi-Lift

TT01D Silvia

TA05-IFS Ebro 350R

TB01 Lancer Evo VII

TLT-1 Max Climber

CC01 VW Touareg

F201 Williams BMW FW24

Tamtech Gear Mini Fox

Tamtech Gear Buggy Champ

Other Brands

Kyosho NSR500 1/8 EP Bike

ProBoat Mini V

55" 25cc Gas Mono Hull

20" Nitro Mono Hull

Olympic EP glider

I am also very intrigued with these Kyosho Mini-Z, my sons and I could have our own indoor Grand Prix .. hmmmmmmm

Funny, I was just going through some old photos the other day and found one of me in my grandparents' driveway in Chicago, driving my Grasshopper... age 13, full of pride of ownership, with my old Airtronics stick radio and the frequency flags flying because no one was around to tell me it wasn't cool... I had mowed grass and painted fences and walked dogs all summer to save up the money.

Now, 35, married, just moved to Portland, Oregon from Los Angeles, and once again having a ball with the Grasshopper. It's a re-release now, controlled by a well-worn Magnum Junior that feels like an extension of my arm.

The more things change...

My first purchase was a Blackfoot at age 12 or 13. Around the same time, my brother had a Sears Super Lobo buggy (Nikko) that was actually quite decent. About a year later, he purchased a new Midnight Pumpkin. We beat all three of them to death for years and then lost interest when we became old enough to drive a 1:1. I got married and wanted another R/C, so in about 1998, I purchased a Traxxas Stampede, a year or so later I bought a NIB old stock MRC Nitro Thunder King. Then we had our first child and got busy with life, so I rarely ran either of those for years.

Fast forward to this past September when I was talking with my brother about our old Tamiyas and he told me that he had a box which contained the mostly complete remains of both of them. I spent a few months gathering parts and restoring them both as "runners." On Christmas day, I presented the resurrected Blackfoot to my son and the Pumpkin to my daughter. They are ages 3 and 7 respectively (never too young to start!) and I am 33. We live in rural Abbeville, South Carolina. We also have the luxury of lots of space and have constructed an off road track on our property complete with driver's stand! I still own all of the R/C vehicles that have passed through my life other than the Lobo that my brother had since it was basically run until there was nothing left. I also picked up a "Frog Scorcher" that was built from a Brat about 20 years ago complete with lots of CRP and Thorp stuff and topped with a vintage Bolink Beetle body.

All of our cars are runners and are broken on a weekly basis, but that's half the fun, right?
