I have found some old Tamiya tubes of silicone sealent for the SRB and three speed series vehicles. I wonder if it is any good still after all these years. The tubes haven't been pierced, but I don't want to squish them all around to see if air has made it inside the crimped end. Any input would be good as I don't want to trade or sell it on to a member only to have them say THIS STUFF IS MESSED UP.

Thanks guys and gals.

Hi Crash , i use silicon products in my work , and silicon has a 'shelf' life and will cure in its tube even if it is unopened , so i would say that after this amount of time the Tamiya ones will probably be of no use , but it is worth opening one up just to see - good luck - cheers ,Kev

I agree with Kev, silicone has a shelf life.

Also, some older silicones were not neutral cure (very acidic). Some remain soft and appear to be ok, yet never cure.

Bummer,

was hoping to use some on a SRB and maybe pass some along to a member with a 3 speed. Don't know what I will do or when I will open it. I can attest that it was stored pretty well as some rubber motor covers from the same lot have survived well.

If you were gona use it then its worth trying one out anyway, you never know.I`ve had tubes of silicone go off from sitting in the van so its a slim chance its still ok.

Given I stumbled across this thread while looking for an answer to a different question - I've just started building up an old 3-speed, and I can say from personal experience, the tube in my kit was dead. It hadn't dried up, it came out of the tube just fine, but it didn't set. Either the rubber or the stabiliser was gone.
