my dt-02 does not have a slipper but i never really cared, but now i'm wondering if all the jumping without one ruined my gears. isn't that the purpose of the slipper clutch; to protect the gear mesh? i've never really been clear.

will i just keep ruining gears if i continue jumping the buggy? i only jump on dirt and try not to land flat or short too often, but you know it happens sometimes.

nothing had ever broken before, but the car began screaming horribly and when i opened it up, the metal pinion was shredded and the spur gear was badly worn. how metal gets shredded by plastic is a mystery that bears some thinking upon, but it happened.

its something that i`ve never thought about, the jumping killing gears.but plastic shredding metal?usually the other way round i`d have thought.so id check to see if there wasnt something else destroying the pinion and if its the pinion thats then destroyed the spur

if its the stock Tamiya pinion... they are soft and wear out quickly. The teeth get really pointy sharp.

Then once the mesh gets loose enough from worn teeth, it'll chew up the spur.

Replace pinion with a steel one from 3rd party.

There are two issues here..

The pinion is being damaged by running and not necessarily by jumping, Tamiya su pply aluminium pinions which wear in a saw tooth pattern which then damages the spur gear, the simple answer is to replace the pinion with a steel item (and replace spur gear at same time) you will not get the same sort of wear in the future.

A slipper clutch on a buggy is to prevent damage to the gears from the sudden decelleration of the wheels on landing from jumps, generally something would have to give and without a slipper clutch it would be gears. If running a high turn (slower motor) normally you dont have to worry too much, Mad Mini has a Desert Gator that has a 19 turn motor and has been jumped off everything she could find and the gears are fine.

So I think the answer you should try is replace the spur gear with a new item, replace the pinion with a steel one and go have fun!

is it just running and the wear and tear that sharpens the pinions?and is it worth replacing the spur with a metal spur gear as well or would that just make more problems metal on metal and the heat build up etc

The DT's have a 32dp pinion and spur, so it's highly unlikely just jumping will do it.

As everyone has said, Tamiya pinions are made from the finest cheese, and wear rapidly. The DT's have a majorly stout gearbox, so you are safe, within reason, if you have used bearings.

well i'm glad to hear this, actually. the spur gear and pinion are easy to replace and i'm just running a sport tuned motor and full bearings. i was fearing that i would have to stop jumping the car or find a way to add a slipper.

do you have any suggestion for a 3rd party supplier of pinion gears?

Robinson Racing makes a good selection of pinions. Make sure you purchase the right type. I'm not sure if the DT-02 uses a metric module pinion so double check before buying.

I am confused about this metric pinions of Tamiya. What are the difference with other ones?

Can someone please post a link of a Tamiya metric pinion and an aftermarket pinion that can be substituted for it?

Thank you.

The Tamiya 17T pinion has teeth on it that are 0.8 module in size, which is near enough in size to a 32dp pinion that 32dp pinions such as this one can be used instead.

The main difference between Tamiya pinions and other makes is that Tamiya make them from soft aluminium, so they wear out before the spur gear, and everyone else makes them from steel so they last forever.
