I have a Clod which I took down on the beach and in the sea near my in-laws in Christchurch. Anyway to cut a long story short I didn't get time to clean it or wash it off so as you can imagine some bits of it have rusted quite badily.

I can buy new parts but I wondered if there is a chemical that I could use to remove the rust as it seems only to be on the surface. I got the salt off with vinegar after an intial wash in cold water didn't work. I am quite willing to try anything (within reason).

Its mainly the suspension and the exposed screws that suffered, the gearboxes seem ok.

Any suggestions.

I think it will be wise to take at least all suspension parts apart and see what the damage is...

You can use WD40 to get things loose if they are stuck, be patient though, if the parts stay stuck after an hour, spray some more in and wait a day, and it will then probably be loose.

WD40 doesn't really remove rust as far as I know, but unless you kept it uncleaned for ages the rusting process will not be too far yet. Just clean it a bit, put WD40 on and it should protect it from rusting (further).

I think if you clean the parts white-spirit and a toothbrush will be a good way to get rid of the sand, grease and other dirt.

WD-40 is acually an excellent rust remover, just let it cure for abit and then remove it with some rubbing/polishing and the rust should come of...

It's not to nice to some rubbers and plastics though so you might want to remove the part that are rusted before you use WD-40 on them...

On the other hand, WD-40 makes an excellent plastic polisher :( the shine is amazing...

nothing better than leaving the parts to soak over night in coca cola or pepsi it works superb mainly on real car parts but also on r/c cars too. give it a try....

you need to decide whether you wish to Remove the rust totally or just stop it rusting more.

There's different chemicals for both, check your local auto store.

Rust removers will leave the surface unprotected, rust will reform even quicker.

Rust fixers will stop the rust and prevent further rusting, but usually goes blue/black.

I use WD40 to remove my rust espically from screw heads.

Just make sure that with whatever you use you dont leave it on there as it will attract more dirt and should that be on a moving part increase any wear,
