Hi Folks, the information could already be in the Forum somewhere..., but I thinking of either the new F350 or Hilux but can't decide which is better looking, scale wise with no wheels and tires upgrade. I know looks are in the eyes of the beholder. In some photos I have seen at TC the F350 looks nice and at certain angle it just looks "funny" and the same goes for the new Hilux. l am not sure it is because of the color theme selected, the light quality of the photo, the angles blab, blab....does any member has both and can do a photo shoot for a side by side comparison? This would help me out a lot. The local LHS here has either one or the other on display and just no side by side comparison to settle it for me once and for all. It would be great, maybe I am asking too much, if photo comparison for front, L & R side, rear and angle shots of the 2 vehicles together  .

On the other hand has any TC member bought one and wish he/she had bought the other one instead? I sure would like to know the reason why you've changed your mind.

Thanks and cheers!

ps does anyone have any inside scoop if Tamiya will put out a dually? That is one mean puppy I would like to get!

hi folks, spoke to a few LHS here in Hong Kong. They all say the F350 is nicer, scale wise. The chassis was design for the F350 but Tamiya decided to us the Hilux which is not quite the right scale, the rear over hang too much. Is like attaching a body not meant for the chassis, is OK but is just not quite right. I also found out or most of you may know already that Tamiya will be putting out 2.2 wheels and tires out around May (maybe is the new Land Cruiser 40 wheels and tires) and the wheel will be all plastic instead of the current metal 2.2 by other makes.

I will some how try to bring the F350 in the house without my wife knowing it. Guess we all know who wear the pants in the family. Yes dear, you are right dear, I will do the dishes after you are finish with your desert, can I get you some tea or draw a hot bath for you and I will make sure the toilet seat is down from now on......

On looks alone, i feel both need a little help before they look scale.

Arguably the Hilux High Lift has the least attractive look in stock form, as the tyres are too small and the body too high on the chassis.

But, in my opinion the hilux is easier to make look "right". All you need to do is fit some scale looking 1.9 wheels (the stock ones are 1.9's but are not that scale looking), larger diameter 1.9 tyres and drop the hight of the shell by altering its mounting points. The larger width and larger wheel arches of the hilux shell suit big 1.9 tyres perfectly, giving a great scale look.

No matter what you do to the F-350, 1.9 wheels will still stick out either side of the shell. In my opinion, the F-350 looks more like a "show truck" as the lifted look isn't scale in appearance to a real F-350. To make those 1.9's fill the arches properly, the axles would need to be narrower and the truck lowered to the point that the center skid would be too close to the ground - in other words it needs more modifications to have the scale look thats easy to achieve with the hilux shell.

For running however, 2.2 size wheels and tyres work better on and off road. The stock 1.9's are simply too small, with too smaller footprint to haul the trucks weight on loose ground. The ground clearance with 1.9's is also low, 2.2's improve axle and center skid clearance and provide more grip. You can still achieve a scale look with 2.2 wheels, but you have to go for a show truck, or serious offroad look

I guess I am after more of show look like the Mounty and Bruiser on the other hand the old Hilux and Blazer don't look bad either. But the current F350 and Hilux is just not quite right with the wheels and tires or maybe the wheels are OK if larger diameter tires can be fitted onto. On the other hand having seen the 2.2 wheels and tires, they seem a little too big and I was told 2.0 or 2.1 does not exist.

I have both - and performance wise they are obviously both the same.

However my feelings are;

The hilux is more fragile in the body stakes as it has more 'bolt on' body parts

The hilux looks more scale and is way more detailed

The hilux looks rubbish on standard tyres, but with something like rc4wds stompers or crushers it looks perfect!

The 350 is perfect for a good cutting up, as bodyparts are pretty cheap!

Its upto you really new or old - what floats your boat!

Wheels and tyres is easy.

i agree that 2.2's look too large so stick with 1.9 and go with rc4wd excellent Rock Crusher.

Perfect size.

And i'l chuck a pic up later if you like?

right i know it's not a hilux hilift but you get the idea :-)

The Hilux is, to my taste, much better looking than the F-350. The Hilux in the boxcover is horrible and pretty depressing, but if you change the wheels and do some proper paint work, you'll see nothing is better than a Hilux High-Lift. I got one this week and used 2.2 wheels and BlackFoot tires to make an early 80's Californian Mudbogger out of it. No further modifications required! It's not 100% ready yet, but the picture perhaps will give you some ideas.

Have a nice weekend!

Thanks blakeatron and mongoose for the photos. You guys are giving me second thoughts. I have seen the F350 and the Hilux photos before and at times they both look ugly and at times they both look great. I am sure is a combination of the color theme, size of tires and the angle of the photos taken. This is like making a decision to either buy the Mounty or the Bruiser, both are nice, but can only have one. Is like bluebarry or cherry pie aHHHHHHHHHHH :)

I only have the F350, but can give you some ideas of what you can do with minimal effort and money!

The TLT wheels and tires make it look so much better in my opinion. :D

nah tyres that wide make it look like a lawntractor... better to get duallies rear and singles front from a semi truck

imho what makes these trucks look wierd is the silver axle cover - its ridiculous!

like a huge manhole cover & who ever paints them silver to highlight them??!

I'd be sticking to black.
