Right, in an effort to fix the car up awaiting arrival of new parts, I took the gearbox apart and put it back together, mounted the motor back on and connected it all up.

Now it only spins up the motor when on full power on the mecanical speed controller, and it makes an horrendous noise when it does. It sounds like a bad electric drill.

I've tried rebuilding the gearbox with no grease, a little grease, more grease and shedloads of grease, and it makes the same noise every time. After a couple of minutes running I can smell an electrical burning smell, but not sure if it's coming from the motor, the gearbox or something in the chassis tub.

The diff appears to spin freely, and in the right direction - not stiff or anything. The performance of the car is about 60% of its maximum though, and it's really getting on my tits having to take the gearbox apart and put it back together again 5 times now.

Shall I just cut my losses and shelf it until I can afford the ESC, and possibly a new motor, or is there anything I can do?

im not an expert, but is the msc reister wires on in the correct order? also there are some cheap esc out there so maybe worth browsing ebay, search world wide!!! but yea with the msc check its wired corectly, also does it make the same noise with battery connected directly to the motor? (dont use a full battery, sumit with little charge will do)

That is a very, very good point. I did take the resistor off, and no idea what order I put the wires back on. Anyone know the correct order?

2 "same" colours either end. The odd coloured wire in the middle.

Yeah, that's what I thought it would be.

Still doesn't explain the horrible noise, which I think may actually be coming from the motor rather than the gearbox... 8-o

Its not a good idea to spray WD40 into a motor...

Have you tried running the motor on its own?? (i.e. out of the car, not fitted to the gearbox??)

What happens if you do? I've used it on 540 silver cans before and they have been ok. Obviously it de greases them so a little oil is needed afterwards. Or is there a big consequence for the motor?

Petroluem distillates, white spirit etc are fairly flammable, not a great idea to spray it into a running motor, but as a general cleaner & lube it should be fine.

It contains around 15% mineral oil too so additional oil afterwards perhaps isn't necessary, unless you need a heavier grade.

Sorted!! Many thanks for everyone's help - I tried everything everyone suggested, and now it works perfectly.

Cleaned the contacts on the MSC, and apparently loosening the motor mounts just a quarter turn stops the noise.

Back out to bash around with the new tyres now. Many thanks! ;)

Ahh cool!

When i cleaned my motor is was out of the truck, and in the kitchen sink :)

The only problem I know with using WD-40 to clean the motor is that it leaves an oily residue on the commutor with will attract dirt pretty fast and the same goes for the rest of the inside of the motor...
