Did anyone see the NIB Wild Willy being offered on ebay that went for $3,500us.

Ebay number 160230810051.

That would have to be a record for almost any Tamiya car wouldn't it?

Wow! And I thought I was spending big...

Anyway, I think one that has serious chances to go up as high as the Willy is the NIB Bruiser that's running up to $2225 (and there are still three days of pushing! )

Cheers,

EB

Yeah I noticed that pricey Willy.

It was bought last night, either by a lottery winner or, more likely, someone rolling in from the pub.

The seller has got bucket loads of NIBs listed but Willy was the only one with a nuts Buy It Now price.

Very nice looking Bruiser kit, apparently its your only chance to buy one :) Gee I wish I had a couple of those to sell and a WW, could retire early

Just realized this would be a good way to do money laundrying, like the other post where the shipping charge is over $3.0million.

Big King Pin will be audited by the IRS and need to somehow account for the millions on hand. Solution....put his son's Tamiya Boy Racer on ebay for $7.8million and sold it and gets pay....clean money.

ps I am the one the came up with the mortgage plan for the American people....is called sub-prime mortgage...

:)

And for all the winner knows, he could open the kit one day and find the tyre blister broken (common as the tyres are big and heavy), and the tyres all dried up and cracked. No hospital/airport scanner will prove the condition of the contents.

For one third of the price, he could have had a normal NIB Wild Willy, in a great box, with perfect, checkable contents.

Oh and FYI, it is nowhere near the highest priced NIB ever. The highest closing prices I can recall off the top of my head are:

- $5000+ for a NIB Black Porsche 934 a few months ago. I'm sure there was a thread here about this.

- $5500+ for a NIB Hilux just a few weeks ago (though I can't find it on ebay now - but it was definitely there)

- $5000+ for a NIB Sand Scorcher a few months ago. See here.

Aside of the Black Porsche (which is very rare), these are box-condition-based auctions too. Normal NIB prices are 20%-30% cheaper than these crazy figures.

cheers,

H.

Have a look at this one.

NO LIVE EBAY LINKS UNLESS THEY ARE YOUR OWN

He obviously doesn't keep an eye on ebay because he would have seen the NIB go for $3,500us.

A good price at $990us

I've gone after few of the more expensive NIBs myself over the years, and every now and then I've caught of a glimpse of the "upper echelon" of collectors. These guys are willing to pay serious coin for what they see as the perfect kit. And they're not scared to go MUCH higher than the prices we usually see on eBay. Most of the times I've run into it in private sales, part of the deal is that the seller isn't allowed to disclose any details of the buyer or the exact price ... the seller just politely lets you know your "fair market value" isn't even close.

Funnily enough, this isn't the first Willy I've heard of going for crazy money ... perhaps it's a really tough kit to get in near perfect condition?

Know what you mean gordb. And it almost starts to sound like there's some kind of secret society of collectors out there. An "Illuminati of Tamiya", if you will. I have heard some stories too from other TC people with more experience than me.

But on the other hand....

At the end of the day, no matter how big they are, Tamiya collecting is such a tiny pond. If someone paid $10,000 for one kit, it'd practically set a record, yet it's not a lot of money by everyday standards. Most people's 1:1 car is worth more than that. My DVD collection is worth more than that :)

Even whole collections worth "millions" need to be kept in context. There's a TV show in Australia called "Collectors", and a few weeks ago they profiled an old couple who collect antique kitchen scales - their collection is worth over $1million.

Tamiya collecting is barely a blip on the radar when it comes to the wider world of collectibles and antiques. My wife's grandma has an old coin collection locked away somewhere, and one coin in particular has been valued at over $100,000. And even that's nothing compared to antique art, furniture, pottery....

cheers,

H.

ROFLMAO! Yeah, reminds me of an "RC-wheels auction" which were 934 wheels, NIP, BIN...a bit drunk but I got it...Cheers!

Key factor is closing time of the pubs...I guess
